Chapter 50

Lily sat staring at the French toast on her plate. She didn't have much appetite, thanks to the cupcakes Sirius had dropped off the previous night.

James was sat to her left, scribbling on the Daily Prophet. She could only assume he was solving the crossword.

"What is similar to orange and has eight letters?" he asked out of nowhere.

Lily counted the letters on her fingers. "Mandarin?"

James quickly filled in the word and let out a yelp of joy when it fit. "How are you so smart, Lils? Lend me some of those braincells for our Potions finals."

Lily rolled her eyes and turned back to her breakfast. "Or maybe you could consider studying for once, Potter."

James pretended not to have heard her jab and continued filling out the crossword. "What is another word for foolish, starts with an S and has six letters?"

"Sirius?" Marlene offered, earning another eyeroll from Lily. With all the childishness around her, it was a surprise her eyes weren't permanently rolled back.

James cackled at Marlene's suggestion and high-fived her as Sirius glared at the two of them.

"That was uncalled for." Sirius protested as he frowned at Marlene, "I should have left you in the kitchen yesterday. Ungrateful brat!"

As the three of them continued bickering, Lily saw the owls fly over towards the students. Among them was Winter, a white envelope tied to his claws. Lily brightened up immediately as she realized whose letter it was.

Winter dropped the envelope on Lily's lap. But to her surprise it felt heavier than usual. She opened the envelope, letting its contents fall out. Along with the letter were two roses, yellow and white, tied together with a red ribbon.

Lily skimmed through the letter quickly and discovered that the flowers were picked by Harry's mum from her garden and she had asked him to send them to Lizzy, as a thank you for the bookmark. Lily wondered how the flowers stayed fresh even though it took several days for the letters to reach their destination.

"What the hell?!"

Lily looked up. The Great Hall was almost empty as most students had left for their classes while Lily was reading the letter. Sirius and Marlene were nowhere to be seen.

But James on the other hand was staring wide-eyed at the letter and flowers in Lily's hand.

"What?" Lily asked, snapping him out of his shocked stupor.

James blinked a few times and Lily frowned. It seemed like he was beginning to say something then stopped himself in time. He cleared his throat and spoke again. "Someone sent you flowers?"

Lily smiled fondly as she placed the flowers on the table. "It's from a friend. His mum sent the flowers."

"Friend?" James repeated, his eyes never leaving the roses.

He was behaving strangely and Lily was confused for a moment before something clicked in her mind. Was he jealous?

"A muggle friend." Lily explained, "Actually, I've never met him. We've only talked through letters. I don't even know anything other than his name. But he's a great friend. His name is Harry."
