"Not what I would've chosen, but hey, you fell in love with the guy who fired me." Mika said passive aggressively. I rolled my eyes. It was pretty much expected; that criminal immunity was probably luxurious for her. Now she had to go back to dodging the long arm of the law like she used to.
"So what if I like him Mika? Don't you have feelings for someone?" I asked. "Surely there's a spot for someone in that cold dark place you call a heart." She put her pale blonde hair in a bun, sticking a pen in it and shaking her head.
"Nope. Oracles don't love." Mika said, crossing her legs and wiggling her foot impatiently.
"What makes you say that?" I asked curiously. She sighed, laying back on her desk.
"Think about it like this: you just won the lottery. People figure out you've come into good money, they want a piece of the pie. Everyone's nice and friendly when you share, but when you stop, they get mad. Just might want to kidnap or kill you so they can have it, or no one else will." She explained. "I spent my childhood in trafficking (Name), eventually you get tired of it. Whether it was for my foresight or my body, people used me without giving a damn about how I felt. I learned it was better to be numb to every emotion rather than leave yourself vulnerable for one. That, (name), is why I don't believe in 'love at first sight'. Do what you will with it, but when you have what I have, it's hard to trust, let alone love."
"Would you give up your power?" I asked. "If even for a day?" She laughed, sitting up and getting off her desk. She moved to one of her bookshelves, picking up an old one yellowed with the effects of time. Blowing off the dust, she tossed me a book with an embroidered title. I swiped away some of the dust.
"Of Fates and Destinies: Oracles of the Afterlife." I read aloud.
"I'm only part Oracle (Name)." She explained. "But I guess that's a story for another time. You should go see Arran, you probably get tired of hearing me ramble. See you later then." Her fingers snapped and I was out like a light, closing my eyes and drifting off to sleep.
...
"Good morning my dear."
My eyes shot open and I sat up quickly, panting and rubbing my forehead. Mika's voice still echoed slightly in the back of my mind, fading away after a few moments. Arran was next to my bed, standing over my bed with tea on a silver platter waiting for me. I really wasn't the type for it, but denying what he wanted seemed like a bad idea in the first place. He was wearing a button down black shirt with the sleeves rolled up. The longer portion of his hair had been tied back in a sort of lazy bun behind his head, most of the strands falling out or tucked behind his ear. The mask was gone; I guess he really didn't feel the need to hide it anymore.
"Hm? You seem distressed. Did you have a bad dream?" He asked. I looked around me, quickly noticing that this wasn't my room, or anything I had ever seen before. It was oddly neat, despite his irregular moods lately, he seemed relatively stable.
"It wasn't bad...strange mostly." I told him. "Can I ask you something?" He smiled, nodding solemnly.
"Of course my darling, ask away. You are completely safe here, I assure you." Arran said. Of course he would say that. But did I really have the resolve to ask about Mika, even if it might trigger an episode from him? I hated to ruin the stability of his mood right now. He closed his eyes for a moment, sighing loudly before placing his hand on my shoulder.
"It's about Hawthorne, isn't it?" He asked. "I can see it in the way that you're hesitating to ask me. You two were friends, but not anymore. I won't allow her to see you anymore, or hurt you. I gave her one responsibility, and she managed to mess that up. That isn't your fault, you couldn't protect yourself from something as monstrous as that Abbadon. He held no interest for you; he just wanted you because I did..."
"What's so valuable about me?" I asked. "There's a million other demons and humans in the universe, what does everyone want with me? Mika, you, Abbadon...why?" He shook his head.
"Whatever Mika tells you, don't believe her. She knows the future, but keeps it all to herself for her own selfish needs. She's a master of trickery (name), she even has you fooled enough to pity her. Don't waste your time worrying about such...hybrids. Mika knows she doesn't belong in Hell, so she just blames the dealer and the rest of the table for the bad hand she's been dealt." Arran explained. "As far as Abbadon...put simply, he wants what other people have because other people have it. He saw you, he wanted you, and he decided to rob you of your innocence. For that, I am truly sorry."
"How did he even find where I lived?" I asked. Arran raised an eyebrow.
"(Name), it's not very hard for us demons to locate you mortals. You especially, have no way of hiding yourselves, so we just come and go as we please." He told me. "But no more of these idle subjects. You must get out of bed; it's too beautiful of a day to sit around doing nothing. I'd like to spend the time to get to know you better, to know your every detail. Then you can learn about me, and you can love me as I love you. Yes, it's been proven that the more time two people spend together, the more the attraction grows. Therefore, you cannot spend time with other people, lest you fall for someone else. I don't really like getting my hands dirty (Name), but for the sake of the remaining innocence that dwells within you, I will." I groaned and turned around, closing my eyes again. I really didn't feel like getting up, and whatever romantic escapade he planned, I wasn't really in the mood for it either. I felt the other side of the bed shift, feeling his arms wrapped around me and his head nuzzled into my neck. My skin tingled with his touch and I jumped slightly.
"Fine. A few more minutes, but your tea is getting cold. I suppose neither of us are morning people." He said coolly.
