"That's your answer?" Mika asked, tying her hair up in a bun and sticking a pin in it. "That's boring."
"What's so boring about it?" I asked, sitting up. She pulled out her phone, sighing.
"That Johnny has a sad story behind him. Seriously, maybe even sadder than mine. That poor kid." Mika said.
"You know him?" I asked, standing up. She moved from her desk, typing something on her phone and nibbling on her thumb.
"I would know. He's been Arran's lackey for years. All because of some promise he made." She pondered. "He's got something inside of him that Arran planted as an experiment. Talk about a parasite." Her phone rang with some rock song blaring from her headphones as a ringtone and she held it up to her ear.
"Yo." She said, putting a finger in her other ear. "Yeah I know, our budget's been cut. I guess we're going back to thieving for a while. The human? Oh yeah, she's fine for now. I'm keeping an eye on her. Only for a little while though, I gotta send her back. Right. See you." She hung up and fell backwards in midair, floating and closing her eyes.
"What was that all about?" I asked curiously.
"That was my partner calling me. I don't do this assassin thing alone you know." Mika explained. "I have a team. But you don't need to worry about that, at least, not for now. I need to explain to you the warning label you clearly forgot to read before choosing this guy and what exactly he injected into you." I looked at the black and red spot in my side, remembering the strange syringe. I had almost forgotten about it.
"What did he put into me?" I asked, looking back up at Mika.
"From the discoloration of that bruise, I'd say he injected you with a mixture of blood from Nightmares, Dream Eaters, and Succubi." She said, examining it closely. "The blood of the succubus replaced with the blood of an incubus, it sounds like the exact same chemical compound that Arran put into Johnny."
"What does that mean for me?!" I asked in a panic. Would I die and come back like Jace? Would I take on a new body or a new form?
"It just means that I need to give you a stabilizing agent within 48 hours or it'll kill you. You'd have to go through the hassle of getting a new body and a new vessel, and that's just a pain for me and you." She explained. "I can get you one, but not within 24 hours." I looked at my bruise again, my heart racing as I looked into Mika's stoic eyes. Why was she so calm?! I could die! She knows if I will!
"(Name), take it easy. It's not that deep. Honestly, the only thing is you'll get a couple of effects temporarily and it'll blow over once I get the antigen in you. Simple as that. I'll get in contact with my buddy Yuki and I'll get it to you as soon as I can safely." Mika reassured me. "You're going to be fine. Just be careful and keep an eye on Johnny Boy for me." I swallowed nervously and laid back in the chair, looking up at her as she sat back down on the desk.
"I'm ready to go back." I told her confidently. "I have to know why he did this." She gave me a reassuring smile, covering it up when she remembered how it really looked to me.
"You're going to be okay. I promise." She told me. Mika put a hand on my forehead, then slid my eyes closed. As they opened again, I was in a red and black pinstripe room like Mika's, only it was set up like a gothic bedroom. Rock posters decorated the walls, and most noticeable of all was the dresser mirror with pictures of me lining it. I could hear the faint sound of a guitar in another room and I swallowed. That must've been Johnny...
No.
That was Jace.I stepped out of bed, carefully tiptoeing to the door and cracking the door. He was to the right. Just how big was this apartment? I moved carefully on the carpeted floor, moving closer to the source of the music. No way this place was a regular apartm—
CREEEEEEEEAAAAAAK!!
I immediately froze and covered my mouth, trying to keep my frantic breath inside as the guitar came to a stop. I heard him move closer to the door I was standing next to. I should've just stayed in bed! He already injected me with a ticking time bomb of blood, what else is he going to do to me. The door creaked open and out walked Jace, holding a hand over his left eye and his guitar strapped behind him. He smiled, but there was something unnerving behind it.
"Y-You can come inside." He told me, opening the door. "It's okay."
"What happened to your eye...?" I asked, reaching for his hand. He immediately ducked away from me, his hand still firmly clasped above it.
"N-No! You can't!" He stuttered. "I don't want you to see. I have to get it under control. It'll scare you."
And injecting me with demons' blood didn't?
"Jace...it's okay. Believe it or not, I've seen some pretty freaky things recently." I assured him. "Please...show me your eye." His showing eye fell on the floor.
"Even if I do, you can't run. I've locked up all the rooms in the cabin." Jace said. "I guess there's really no point in hiding it." He slowly moved his hand and showed his eye, the coal color of Mika's and his irises blood red.
"It's the mark of a criminal in Hell." He murmured. "Arran knows, he knows!"
"Knows what?" I asked, trying to calm him down.
"That I took you away! Now he's on a manhunt looking for me! He can't track me down because I took out his precious little torture device!" Jace panicked. "(Name), sweet sweet (Name), I just had to take you with me! You knew the truth about me, and I was afraid that you wouldn't come with me, that you would run into the arms of those other fuckers! I couldn't have that happening! But I gave you my compound! We share the curse now, we're finally one, and you understand!"
"How are you going to reverse it?" I asked, holding his cheeks. "Jace, look at me." His eyes finally found their way into mine.
"Antigen! There's an antigen, and I have someone bringing it, she's an old friend who was betrayed by Arran too!" He exclaimed, nodding. I raised an eyebrow.
"Mika?" I asked. He nodded again, trying to muster a smile. I sighed, holding his wrist and leading him back into the bedroom I was just in.
"We can wait for the antigen together. But this frantic thing you're doing isn't going to help you with anything. You look like you haven't slept since Cobain was still alive. Listen, you need bedrest." I told him, forcing him to lay down on the bed. I pulled the covers over him and touched his forehead, the skin burning like he had a fever.
"Please stay in here with me." He murmured, holding my hand before I could walk away.
