I woke up, seeing Jace standing at the glass door leading to the balcony outside. He was watching snow fall on the ground, silently covering the earth. In his hand he was idly spinning a knife around, its edge covered in a dark red ooze. I would assume it was blood, but it was too dark for that to be the case. The same was all over his clothes. On his left arm, what appeared to be veins had blackened through his skin.
"Mika's coming today." He said softly. "She'll get us the antigen." I sat up. I didn't really have the heart to tell him that I had seen Mika all along. Still, seeing her every night could be a dream, and this was reality. Maybe it could be the other way around, where Mika's reality is reality, and this is just some contiguous nightmare. Maybe both somehow really existed.
"What's wrong with your arm?" I asked, eyeing it. He turned back to me, closing the curtains in front of the door and sitting on the bed.
"Dark energy creates itself really quickly inside of my soul. Arran used to use it for his own purposes, but now that I refuse him, it's just collecting." Jace explained. "I have to find a way to expel it soon. Mika would know how. She'll know when she gets here."
I got out of bed, standing in front of the window with him. The way snow fell was always satisfying to look at. It made everything look new, a fresh way to start. Still, my mind couldn't drift away from Jace's arm.
"Does it...hurt?" I asked, trying to look away.
"More like a tingling feeling, like pins and needles. It's more of a pain in the ass than actual pain." He said. "Wait here, I have to clean myself up." He walked out of the room, leaving the bloody knife on the dresser. When he left, I reached for it, only to see the veins in my hands turn the same blackish color.
"(Naaaame...)"
I looked up, seeing what looked like grayscale version of myself with blood red eyes. Her teeth were sharp just like Mika's, and they were flashing a grin at me. I resisted the urge to scream and backed against the glass door behind me.
"(Naaaame)...don't be afraid of yourself." She said, stepping closer. I swallowed in fear. Who the hell was this? Was this...was this Jace's doing?
"Who the hell are you?!" I said, panicked.
"Your true self. Every impulse, every subconscious thought, every instinct...that is me. You've been ignoring me for all of these years." The girl said. "Until Johnny Boy set me free. (Name), I am your Impulse." Her hand reached for me and I closed my eyes, expecting the worse.
"Well fuck me sideways, Johnny Boy pulled it off!"
I gasped and looked behind me, seeing Mika standing outside the glass door, laughing to herself. My Impulse was gone, but I was still breathing erratically. Mika saw the fear in my eyes, leaning against the door. Her eyes turned their coal color for a moment.
"Fucking hell, what's gotten into you n—oh shit. Impulse?" She asked. Right. She was an Oracle. She could see my future just by looking me in the eye.
"Impulse." I said, opening the door for her. She came in quickly, rubbing her hands together for warmth.
"It's cold as shit...damn physical form." She muttered. "I miss my Hell warmth. You guys got a fireplace in this cabin?"
"U-Um...I think so." I said. "What do you mean, 'pulled it off'?" She unzipped her hoodie, taking it off and laying it on the bed. She then took off her Converses, summoning two syringes in her hands.
"Alright, I'll get your blood and souls back in check. Where's Johnny?" Mika said, looking around. Just as she said his name, he came into the room, towel drying his hair. Mika grinned, showing her spiked teeth.
