"You're alive. And you've met her...family."
I jolted awake, realizing I was back in Katsu's office. He was sitting patiently at his desk, reading a book in Japanese. His eyes pierced into mine long enough for me to feel uncomfortable, then he returned to his book.
"We went to a diner...I met her...uncle, I think?" I said. "He looked pretty young to be an uncle." He nodded.
"Mika's family life is...complicated, to say the least. Abbadon, as he likes to call himself, is the only one that she can confirm to be alive and conscious. Even so, their relationship isn't...well, simpatico." Katsu said. "I can't say that mine is any simpler."
"What's wrong with your family?" I asked.
"My father is abusive and a rapist. My mother just takes it and simply allow it to happen to all of her children." He explained. "Most of the children have left Hideki Manor...only my young sister stays. She only does it to take care of the younger children. Mother and Father certainly won't." My eyes widened and I saw his eyes fall, a brief moment of anger and grief in his eyes.
"Awaji...I visit her when I can, but it proves to be difficult if I want to avoid my parents." He said. "She's the strongest of any of us. She deserves better. I would offer her a much better place to stay, but...I don't want her involved with my blood money. I left years ago. I couldn't stand living in that house, even in the lap of luxury, I was just sitting in gilded chains. Like most demons, my power was inherited, and unlike my other brothers, I inherited the Hideki abilities of telekinesis and telepathy. Father saw me as the last chance to have a child molded in his image. My own name...it means 'victory' in Japanese. He wanted me to be his trophy child, something he could display on a shelf as proof of something he had accomplished. After I left, I believe he tried to force those ideals on Awaji. She has the ablities; she is simply terrified to show them or use them."
"Does Mika have any siblings?" I asked. He put his book away, folding his arms and laying back in his chair.
"None. Her parents had a hard enough time having her alone. Having a sibling would be near impossible. Having Mika in itself surpasses the odds. No Oracle willingly sacrificed her position for the sake of a child before, or for the sake of a lover for that matter." Katsu said. "Kiari Hawthorne was loved by all. She was benevolent, and often spent more time here in Hell than she ever did in the Motherland, the utopia of Oracles. After Lady Kiari broke her vow of celibacy, she was banned from Motherland; I think she preferred it that way. From my understanding, she was very loving and affectionate from the one she called Danté."
"Did Mika ever know her?" I asked. He was acting like he didn't hate me; maybe talking about Mika makes him feel better. Still, the fact that he knew so much about her past proved how close the two were. Kiari and her lover sounded amazing, like a dream come true. Katsu shook his head.
"She was killed when Mika was very young. Mika wouldn't remember her." He explained.
"Then how do you know all of this?" I asked. He sighed, eyes leaving the page.
"I'm a lot older than I'll admit (Name). Demons don't age in Hell; the only reason I have the appearance I have now is a mixture of illusion and my travels in the world of the living." Katsu said. "That and Mika told me."
"Then who is her father? If her mother was so loved, why did someone kill her?" I asked. He shook his head.
"You ask too many questions (Name), and killers-for-hire don't like that." He said coldly. "But if it really matters to you, no one knows why Kiari was killed. To this day, Mika searches for her killer. All leads have gone cold, and despite the situation looking bleak, she refuses to give up. As far as her father...well, I'm not at liberty to say. She should share that with you when she chooses. Besides, she has a personal vendetta with him. I think it would be best for you to hear her opinion before you pass judgement on him, like the Vendettas did so long ago." A heavy air hung around us, so thick it could have choked us both. Despite trying to maintain that overall disillusioned attitude, I could feel the discomfort radiating off of Katsu. He put down the book, sitting on the desk with his hands folded in his lap. He sighed, taking off his glasses and hanging them on his hoodie.
"She doesn't think her life was worth her parents'." I said softly. "Why?"
"That's a question only she can answer. She's dealt with a lot; can you truly blame her? If I simply went into depth about what happened to her...it would bring anyone to tears. There's a lot one can hide behind a smile. Drugs, alcohol, gambling...it's an elaborate mask to hide the pain." He said. "I've tried to help her the best that I can. I believe she holds a lot of bitterness and regret in her heart, as if she is failing to fulfill some destiny. When she found out that she was part Oracle, she trained so hard so that she could impress them one day, hoping they would take her in to the Motherland. They spurned her immediately." His eyes narrowed and then he glared at me. That same piercing look of hatred had returned. Oh no, he wanted me dead again. Man, that look is unnerving.
"You would never know what that feels like. You would never understand how she feels on the inside. I've been trying to help her for years now, as her partner and companion. What makes you think you can simply fix her? Do you even believe that you can save her from ruin?"
