Ethan's POV

With a cigarette in between my lips, I stared out the balcony while I waited for Raine. I remembered waking up without her by my side.

Where had she gone to? Why didn't she tell me anything? Was it possible she'd left me? Those were not all the questions that roamed my mind. And anxiety wasn't helping me.

I waited for hours and hours, until the sun went down and switched places with the moon.

Jack wasn't here. He was somewhere out there, visiting some friends he had in London, so I was all by myself, which made it even worse.

Being by yourself is peaceful, sometimes. This was an exception. It frustrated me. Made me think endlessly throughout the hours and worry too damn much.

I was about to give up and go look for Raine myself, when I heard the door close.

She was here.

I turned around. My eyebrows furrowed as I watched her walk around the room as if she was searching for something.

I could tell in her eyes that she was tired and had no time for little talks. But I had to ask her, for a little peace of mind.

"Where were you?" I asked. My voice was deep and hoarse from smoking and not using it too much throughout the day.

I did not hear an answer, but an uncomfortable silence between us.

I was about to start yelling at her for making me crazy worried about her, when I saw her look away. I thought she was looking for another cigarette. Then I saw she was crying. I could feel her crying. Shaking and crying.

She wouldn't look up. [Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises]

Her lips were quivering, pale lips and her misty blue eyes filled with sadness.

That's when I knew, that something had happened to her. So I swallowed my pride, and relaxed my shoulders. My face softened and filled with concern.

She walked slowly over to me and before her tears could hit the floor, she buried her face in my chest. Her arms wrapped around my torso, and muffled cries escaped her mouth.

I placed a hand on her head, stroking her gently, letting her cry. I then put my arms around her tiny waist and held her tight against me.

The fact that she began crying made me even more worried about what had happened to her.

When I heard her cries get quieter then, I pulled away slowly from her and cupped her face, wiping the tears away from her eyes.

"What happened, Raine?" I asked her. The tone in my voice a lot soother, more gentle.

She shook her head, refusing to answer. She took my hand and lead me to the bed. I watched her lay down slowly, like a little fragile human being that's on the verge of breaking, and cover her cold body with the quilt.

Her quiet sobs were heard, as she cried against the pillow.

I wanted to know so bad what happened to her, but I also didn't want to put any pressure on her. I didn't want her crying so I kept quiet.

I wanted to let her know that I'd be keeping her promise, that I'd be there for her no matter what. Just like I told her the day I gave her the promise ring she was wearing.

So I walked around the bed, and laid next to her. Her arms slowly made their way around my chest and placed her head on top. My hand automatically wrapped around her, soothing her the best I could.

Eventually, her cries were quiet. Her eyes were closed. She was finally asleep.

I wiped the last tear rolling down her cheek and kissed the top of her head.

What have they done to you Raine?
