The polyamorous relationship had been going on for about a year now, James and Aaron were fully engaged in it and loving it. But for Thomas, all he saw was James being taken away from him. Thomas and James were happily engaged before Thomas' best friend had admitted to having feelings, James suggested they try out a polyamorous relationship and because Thomas didn't want to hurt his best friend... He agreed. James had promised that their relationship still meant something, just that Aaron was now a part of their lives. However, over the course of the year, James noticed something. He noticed Thomas was becoming... Distant.

Thomas was beginning to separate himself because the pain was too much, he hated seeing James with Aaron. He knew Aaron was just stealing James' attention, so he decided to just let it go and try to get away. But something kept him there, that promise that James had made.

"Thomas, I promise you we still mean something."

"James, look at your hand. That ring means something, You and I, together, forever."

"And we'll still be that Thomas. It'll always be you and me, just, Aaron is now with us."

Thomas looked down at the ring he had given James that was resting loosely on James' finger.

"Thomas we can still be happy. We can still be us. It just won't be only us. I love you, and I promise you that I will never leave you for Aaron, I promise that this ring still means you and I forever, and I promise that you and I mean forever."

"Okay."

Like a fool, Thomas had believed him. James didn't know it, but the day he took off that ring and never put it back on broke Thomas down to nothing but a cracked, scarred heart. Thomas wore the ring on a necklace, he constantly waited for the day James would remember what forever was. He never did. Thomas grew more distant by the day until eventually, he barely talked to James, and made no contact with Aaron. So one night, when Aaron went out with some friends, James decided he wanted to find out why.

He walked into their room to find Thomas curled on his side, the moonlight giving enough light so you could see his tear stained face. Enough light so that you could see how dead Thomas was while still being alive. Not only had Thomas grown distant from James and Aaron, but he grew distant from himself. He had stopped caring about himself.

"Thomas?" James asked softly.

Thomas barely managed to look at James.

"Tommy what's wrong?"

Thomas almost began crying again at the mention of the nickname James had given him. It reminded him of their happier times. Though the happiness seemed so long ago.

James slowly walked forward and sat on the bed next to his lover. Cautiously, he put a hand on Thomas' shoulder.

"Thomas please tell me what's bothering you."

"Nothing." Thomas' voice was small and full of pain.

It almost sounded as if the very southern drawl he always talked with had disappeared completely. It broke James' heart seeing Thomas like this. Only he didn't know that he was the very reason Thomas was in this current state.

"Thomas please-"

"I'm fine Madison."

Madison?

James was stunned, even when Thomas was beyond pissed he never called James by his surname. It sounded weird coming from Thomas. Thomas hadn't said Madison in years

"Thomas something is wrong, you never call me Madison."

"Go away, I said I'm fine."

Thomas didn't want to break down in front of James, he just wanted them to ignore him like they always had.

"Do you want me to call Aaron?"

"NO! Not Aaron."

"Why not?"

That was it, Thomas couldn't hold his act together anymore. He broke down.

"Because Aaron is the reason I am like this. James, you promised me that we were forever. Where is your ring?"

James looked down.

Thomas pulled the necklace off his neck.

"Right here. I've had it ever since you took it off. I didn't want Aaron to be a part of what we had. But I didn't want to break his heart. But he broke mine by stealing you from me."

James looked into Thomas' broken eyes, he saw the truth and the pain behind what Thomas was saying. He felt guilty.

"We can fix this Thomas. Let's just break it off with Aaron and we can be us again. Only us."

"James, I've waited a year for you to realize. I've only ever had my eyes on you, James, I've only ever wanted you. But you were too in love with Aaron to realize how he was tearing us apart."

James knew there was heavy truth to Thomas' words. He knew that Thomas was never the same when they introduced Aaron into their lives, in reality, James thought Thomas could get over it. But he didn't.

"Thomas I'm so sorry. Please let it be us again, let me make it up to you. I'm so sorry. I knew you were getting distant but I didn't know it was because of me."

Thomas took a moment and looked at James. He could see that James was sincere with his apology. Thomas knew James was sorry and he knew James wanted it to be them again.

"James, what about Aaron?"

"Fuck Aaron."

James leaned down and gently connected their lips. Thomas let out a tear of happiness.

"James?"

"Yeah?"

"I forgive you"

James smiled and they packed up a bag each. They decided to just leave a note telling Aaron why they left and before they left, Thomas slid the ring back onto James' finger. They were united again.

The distance between them was gone. They were happy.

Forever
