So recently, I've been obsessed with HBO's "John Adams" starring Paul Giamatti as John Adams, Stephen Dillane as Thomas Jefferson, Tom Wilkinson as Benjamin Franklin, and Laura Linney as Abigail Adams. Holy crap do I ship Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. They were best friends historically, more so than Jefferson was with Madison. I will go down with this ship. I wanted to make a one shot with them, so I just put it in my Hamilton OneShots. Hope you don't mind...
Thomas Jefferson was asleep in his Monticello estate. Peacefully I might add. It was a beautiful night, full moon, a few clouds, bright stars. One might say that it was a perfect night. However, it wasn't perfect for John Adams, you see, John had always found life stressful. He would also admit he had a temper, but tonight was worse. Tonight, he had been given fearful news. John had tried to keep his affections toward his friend Thomas Jefferson a secret. Secrets were hard to have in his life. Many were close to him, and all it took was one slip up for the entire nation to know. His slip up happened when he was in a rather heated argument with Colonel Alexander Hamilton. He had knocked over a small cabinet containing his letters from Thomas Jefferson. His letters contained rather sexual wording and remarks. John had tried to pick up the letters, but one fell into the hands of Colonel Hamilton.
Dearest John,
I must confess my dear friend, my thoughts of late have been of you. Days pass and these mere thoughts become more reprehensible. I can only accept that I love you. These affections of mine have existed for quite some time. Since the time of my wife Martha's passing, I have only realized that you my dear are the one I have truly loved. My desire for your fondness grows with every passing minute. I have tried to deny these affections, but I can no longer. I yearn for your contingence and I can only pray that you return these affections.
Your dear friend,
Thomas Jefferson.
It was the letter where Thomas had admitted his affections toward John. Now Hamilton had read it. No doubt he was gonna use it to ruin the lives of his two most hated enemies. John had begged Colonel Hamilton to not tell a soul, but the Colonel's mind had been made up the moment he read the letter and saw Thomas' signature. Swiftly, Hamilton had turned on his heel, letter in hand and he ran to none other than General Washington, who was disgusted by the affections the two men had. It didn't take long for the public to find out of the disgraceful feelings the two shared.
As soon as Hamilton had left the office of John Adams, he quickly began packing a small bag, knowing he and his lover would have to run to escape the sure death by hanging that awaited them. But where would they go? It was no lie that in two or three weeks time the entire population of the 13 United States would know. They were Government officials and word traveled quick between the states. With his bag in hand, John ran. He ran to Monticello. Though it was nighttime, he had no time to waste. He had to get Thomas up and packed quickly for he did not wish to see harm come upon them.
Thomas always left his door unlocked, having great faith that no one would break into his home. John walked in and quietly walked to Thomas' bed. He looked at the peaceful Virginian for a moment before waking him.
"Thomas," he said quietly.
Thomas continued sleeping peacefully.
"Thomas wake up," John said while softly shaking his shoulder.
Thomas opened his eyes slowly and saw John standing over him, he was startled for a moment, but quickly adjusted to the situation.
"What is it John?" He asked tiredly.
"We have a problem Thomas..."
The Virginian looked at the Massachusettsan with a confused look.
"What problem John?"
John took a breath and looked softly into Thomas' sky blue eyes.
"They know."
"Who? What?" Thomas was even more confused until John clarified.
"The people know about us," John said blankly.
"How?"
Thomas was now alert and very awake, he sat up quickly.
"Hamilton found the letter you sent me. The one where you admitted your love for me. He took it to Washington, no doubt that Congress knows, by tomorrow, all of Washington will know, and in a matter of weeks, all the States will know. New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, they'll all know Thomas."
Thomas' eyes darted around in thought. He took a moment to fully realize the danger they were in.
"So what do we do?"
"We run."
"Where? You just said the States will know. We have no where to run dear Adams."
John stopped to think for a moment. He had to think quick and he blurted out the nearest place he could think of.
"The northern Colonies."
"John are you mad? Those Colonies are British!"
"It's the only place we can go my love."
Thomas was silent. It took minutes for him to speak.
"Very well. I suppose we could always-"
"We are not going to France."
Thomas nodded and got out of bed, he quickly packed a bag. Once he had everything, he looked at John.
"Are you sure about this my beloved?"
"Thomas, I've never been more sure of anything, except for you writing the Declaration of Independence."
"I wasn't the only author-"
"Let it go dear Thomas. You drafted it and that's enough. I love you either way."
Thomas smiled, something he only did in the presence of John Adams.
Suddenly, the front door burst open and James Madison came rushing in.
"Thomas, they know. You need to- Oh... Hello Adams."
Thomas and John chuckled.
"Jemmy, we know. We're leaving now."
James was the only person Thomas and John entrusted with their little secret. James would never rat out his two best friends.
"Where are you two going?" James asked.
"The British Colonies," Thomas said unhappily.
"Will I ever see you again?"
"I'm afraid not my dear friend. This is where we part."
Thomas was clearly upset over leaving James, the two had been friends for a long time. James saw the obvious hurt in Thomas' expression, he slowly walked over and wrapped his arms around Thomas' waist. Thomas was quick to hug the smaller male back. He always hated farewells. But it was necessary.
James pulled away.
"Well then, you should get going. Be safe my friends."
Thomas and John nodded before walking out into the brisk November air. John stood on his toes and kissed his lover softly. Thomas kissed back and they broke away as they climbed onto Thomas' horse. John wrapped his arms firmly around Thomas' waist and they left the States, never looking back.
Their love was eternal, they lived happily in Quebec, John didn't want to go to France, so he settled for the closest thing to it. Together they lived, even dying on the same day.
