Cheerful.
That was the first word everyone used to describe Peggy. The cheerful girl in yellow. But that wasn't how Peggy felt. At home, Peggy was different, when she was alone she was different. If Angelica or Eliza were around, she would pretend to be happy. The truth was, Peggy was depressed. The only person who saw through her "mask" was Lafayette. But every time he asked about it, she'd get defensive. This time, he had enough. He was tired of watching Peggy painfully pretend to be happy, tired of watching her hide the tears and the hurt. He wanted to help her, but he needed her to let him in.
Peggy was sitting on a bench, hugging her knees as she stared into the distance. Lafayette walked over to her, immediately, she sat up straight and greeted him with a smile.
"Hey Laffy!"
"Hey Pegs."
"You okay?"
"No. Are you?"
Peggy seemed taken aback, she was used to Lafayette asking this, but she wasn't used to him asking her directly, it was normally subtle.
"Yes. I'm fine," she said happily.
Lafayette sighed in frustration.
"Peggy. I can see past your little act. Give it up."
Peggy wasn't gonna give up. She didn't want anyone to know about her depression.
"I said I'm fine Lafayette. Now leave me alone."
"Peggy, please let me help."
Lafayette was begging her not to brush it off, he saw how it affected her and he wanted to help her. But she needed to let him.
"Lafayette. LEAVE ME ALONE!" She snapped.
Of course, she wasn't trying to sound harsh, but she didn't like how pushy Lafayette was being. Lafayette was staring at her, Peggy never yelled unless it was directed at Thomas Jefferson. She seemed to hate him. As a matter of fact, all three Schuyler's hated him. Doesn't help that their father hates Jefferson's parents...
That was besides the point, Peggy tried to compose herself, but she didn't like the corner Lafayette was backing her into.
"Please, Laf. Just go."
She turned to walk away but Lafayette grabbed her arm, turning her back around.
"Peggy. Please, let me help you." Lafayette had tears in his eyes now.
Peggy didn't like making Lafayette feel this way, but she was determined to deal with her depression on her own.
She rips her arm away from Lafayette.
"Laf. Stop! Just stop! Leave me alone!" Tears of her own were forming in her eyes. She started walking away, leaving Lafayette standing alone. Not for long though, Lafayette ran to catch up with her.
"Peggy!"
Peggy turned around, eyeliner ran down her cheeks with her tears
"What?!?" She asked sharply.
It hurt Lafayette to see one of his best friends like this. He couldn't stand it. If his friends weren't happy, he wasn't happy.
"Peggy. Let me help you, please. It hurts to see you like this."
"Can't you see it Laf? I don't want help! I can do this on my own!!" Her voice was cracking, and every time it did so, Lafayette cried harder.
Lafayette was speechless, he stood a few feet in front of Peggy, unsure of how to respond.
"I don't need help. I'm doing JUST FINE ON MY OWN. WHY DO YOU EVEN CARE?"
"Peggy, you're my friend. I-I hate s-seeing you upset..."
Peggy looked at Lafayette for a moment, she saw the truth to his words, she heard the honesty in his voice.
"P-please l-let me help you Peggy." Lafayette's voice was small.
Peggy looked down. Part of her was trying to keep up the act, but part of her wanted to let Lafayette help her. She didn't know which voice to listen to, but when she saw Lafayette's pained expression, she made up her mind.
She ran toward Lafayette, hugging him tightly.
"I'm sorry Laf... I-I should've c-come t-to you earlier."
"Shhhh Peggy... It's okay. I'm gonna help you."
Peggy nodded and sobbed into Lafayette's shirt. Lafayette walked her to his house, knowing she wouldn't want to be seen in public like this.
When they got inside, Lafayette made tea for her, handing it to her and sitting on the couch next to her. They talked for a while, Peggy explained when it started. Lafayette listened to every word.
"I've tried medications too, nothing seems to help..."
"Well let me try."
She looked at him. She put down her cup and crawled over next to Lafayette, curling up to his side.
"Please save me.... s-save me from this hell."
Lafayette put an arm around her.
"I promise Peggy, I'll help you. Nothing's gonna hurt you anymore."
Peggy smiled and rested her head on Lafayette's shoulder, slowly, she fell asleep. Lafayette chose to stay put, letting her sleep. He put the t.v on quietly and watched as Peggy slept peacefully. For the first time in years, they were both happy.
