(Trigger warning- Thoughts of suicide)
Alexander sat quietly at his desk attempting to finish a paper for General Washington. Suddenly Eliza walked in holding a letter with Alexander Hamilton written in fine handwriting on the front. Eliza walked up to Alexander and spoke softly.
I may not live to see our glory.
"Alexander, there's a letter for you."
But I will gladly join the fight.
Alexander glanced up briefly.
"It's from John Laurens, I'll read it later." He stated looking back to his paper.
And when our children tell our story.
"No, It's from his father."
This statement caught Alexander's attention. He turned around and stood up to face Eliza.
"His father? Will you read it for me?"
Eliza nodded and spoke gently and clearly.
They'll tell the story of... tonight.
"On Tuesday the 27th, my son was killed in a gunfight against British troops retreating from South Carolina. The war was already over. As you know, John dreamed of emancipating and recruiting 3,000 men for the first all-black military regiment. His dream of freedom for these men, dies with him."
Tomorrow there'll be more of us!
"Alexander, are you alright?" Eliza asked softly.
With tears pricking his eyes, Alexander sat down in his chair and picked up his quill.
"I have so much work to do." Was all he could choke out. Eliza nodded and walked out of the room. Philip and Angelica were about to walk in when Eliza stopped them.
"Give your father some space... His friend died."
All Alexander could think about was John, all he could see was the light fading from his eyes as rain continued to storm down on the fields of South Carolina. The one thing that Alexander thought was that John never received his letter. Alexander would never hear his friend's response. Though he was sure they were more than friends.
Peace made, My Dear friend, a new scene opens. The object then will be to make our independence a blessing. To do this we must secure our union on solid foundations; an herculean task and to effect which mountains of prejudice must be leveled!
It requires all the virtue and all the abilities of the country. Quit your sword my friend, put on the toga, come to Congress. We know each others sentiments, our views are the same: we have fought side by side to make America free, let us hand in hand struggle to make her happy ....
Yrs for ever
A Hamilton.
Suddenly, he thought of the day he met John Laurens. One of the very few people he was certain he loved. Now he was gone, forever. Alexander tried to stand up, but his breath hitched and his knees buckled as he fell to the floor, not bothering to pick himself up.
(I Dreamed A Dream - Les Misérables)
"There was a time when men were kind.
When their voices were soft, and their words inviting."
He could only think about the times they spent together, how close they grew.
"There was a time when love was blind, and the world was a song, and the song was exciting. There was a time..."
Now he had just lost his best friend, and most likely his lover. John Laurens, was dead.
"Then it all went wrong."
Alexander was curled up in fetal position on the floor, weeping his eyes out as soft sobs came out his mouth.
"I dreamed a dream in times gone by,
When hope was high and life worth living."
John gave Alexander's life purpose, John gave him hope.
"I dreamed, that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving."
Alexander didn't understand what he did wrong. All he wanted was for John to return home and live with him. Was that too much to ask?
"Then I was young and unafraid,
And dreams were made and used and wasted,
There was no ransom to be paid,
No song unsung, no wine untasted."
How could Alexander have known that this life changing letter would arrive tonight?
"But the tigers come at night,
With their voices soft as thunder;
As they tear your hope apart,
As they turn your dream to shame."
He had asked John to live with him in the last letter he sent, but it would never reach him. Alexander could remember the times and years they spent together.
"He slept a summer by my side,
He filled my days with endless wonder.
He took my childhood in his stride,
But he was gone when autumn came,
And still I dream he'll come to me.
That we will live the years together.
But there are dreams that cannot be,
And there are storms we cannot weather."
Alexander didn't know how to move on, he didn't want t live without John by his side. Strangled cries escaped Alexander's mouth. Eliza and the children could hear their father's life being torn apart.
Alexander looked up and saw his pistol sitting on a shelf. He rose to his feet and grabbed it. Before he had any second thoughts, he was out the door and running. He didn't care where he went, he just wanted to be somewhere he could die, and no-one would hear. He came to a stop in a field and fiddled with the trigger.
"I had a dream my life would be,
So different from this hell I'm living,
So different now from what it seemed,
Now... life... has killed
The dream... I dreamed."
Alexander rose the gun to his head and was about to pull the trigger when he heard a familiar voice pipe up behind him.
"Alexander?"
He whipped around and was relieved to see someone he cared about. Someone who would stop him.
"Aaron Burr, sir?"
"Sir, you seem off, what's botheri-" Aaron froze when he saw the gun. Quickly, he ran to Alexander and grabbed the gun from him.
"My dearest Alexander, what on Earth are you doing? Your life is so precious, why would you ever throw it away? You said it yourself, 'there's a million things you haven't done'." Aaron said sweetly. Alexander looked down and started to sob, Aaron put his hand under Alexander's chin and lifted his head up. Alexander's knees buckled again only this time, Aaron caught him and held him close.
"Aaron..." Alexander choked out.
"Yes Alexander?"
"John's dead." Alexander said and sobbed harder.
"Shhh, I know, I know, I heard. But listen to me, he loved you. The same way I do."
Alexander was confused for a moment.
"What?" He questioned.
"I love you Alexander Hamilton." With that, Aaron pulled him closer and closed the gap with a gentle kiss. After a couple moments, they pull away.
"Please don't leave me Aaron." Alexander pleaded.
"Never." Aaron wrapped his coat around Alexander and for the first time in a week, Alexander managed to fall asleep, and he was safely held close by the man who had always been there. Aaron Burr.
