Growing up his name was Marie du Motier, unfortunately, Marie was born female. He hated school, every kid would make fun of him, the teachers tried to help, but only one kid was nice to him. Here's the story of the day Gilbert du Motier (which was his preferred name) met his best friend, Alexander Hamilton.
It was a rainy day in New York, Gilbert had just gotten to school. He walked into his grade 11 history class with his favorite teacher, Mr. Washington. Gilbert loved Mr. Washington, he was the only person in his school who used his name. Everyone else called him Marie, on purpose. Carefully, Gilbert set down his bag and greeted his teacher.
"Morning Mister Washington," he said quietly.
"Ah Gilbert, good morning! How are you?"
Gilbert looked up briefly.
"Same as always..."
The clock read 7:30 AM. Gilbert always got to school thirty minutes early, he enjoyed talking with his teacher first thing in the morning. It was calming for him, he would talk to his parents, but they were never home. Eventually, he began to see Mr. Washington as a fatherly figure. Especially after Washington started calling him 'son'.
"So, Gilbert, I thought you would want to know, we're getting a new student, a transfer from the Caribbean."
Gilbert's ears perked at the thought of a new friend, maybe this new kid would accept him.
"Interesting, but why would I want to know?"
Washington stood up and began to write the plan for the day on the board.
"Because he's like you."
This made Gilbert smile so wide you'd think he was the Joker.
"He's transgender?"
"Yep, that's why I told you. I'm sure he'll need a friend who understands him."
"I'll do whatever it takes to welcome him."
"Thank you, Gilbert."
Before they knew it, the bell rang. Everyone piled into the classroom, but Gilbert didn't spot the new kid. Washington asked Gilbert to go find Alexander.
After walking around a bit, Gilbert heard crying from the boys' washroom. Gently, he opened the door and walked in. He saw someone he didn't recognize.
"Hey, are you okay?" Gilbert asked softly.
"No..." The boy said.
"What's your name?"
"Alexander." He said cautiously.
"Oh, you're the new kid. Washington told me you were transgender?"
"Umm... yes."
"Don't be nervous, I am too. My name's Gilbert."
This perked Alexander's attention.
"Really?"
Gilbert brought Alexander into a hug.
"Yes, really."
Suddenly, a loud clap of thunder sounded, and Alexander tightened his grip on Gilbert. Alexander let out a strangled cry into Gilbert's shoulder.
"Shh, you're okay."
Alexander sobbed harshly into Gilbert's shoulder, all the while Gilbert cooed sweet nothings into his ear. After the rain stopped, Alexander stopped crying briefly, until the announcement came.
"Teachers and students, we have gotten word that a hurricane is about to hit New York. Please take cover immediately."
Alexander froze, then started shaking.
"Gilbert? Alexander?" They heard Washington's voice through the hallway.
"In here!" Gilbert shouted
Washington abruptly opened the door and found the two boys.
"What's wrong?" He questioned.
"Alexander's having a panic attack."
"Unfortunately, there's no time to get to safety, we'll have to stay in here."
Washington rushed over to the boys and hugged them, they sunk to the floor and Washington held them close.

After the event, the three looked at each other. They rushed out and Washington got a call that broke his heart.
"I have to get home; my parents are probably worried sick!" Gilbert exclaimed.
Washington looked him in the eye and carefully proceeded.
"Gilbert, your parents never made it home, I just got the call now. They're dead."
Gilbert fell to the floor. His eyes brimming with tears. It was Alexander's turn to comfort his crying friend.
After comforting his friend, Alexander tried to distract him.
"Hey Gilbert, what's your full name?"
"Gil-Gilbert d-du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette." He didn't bother with his full nine names.
"Hang on, where'd the 'Marquis' come from?" asked Washington.
"Just got it now," Gilbert said.
"But Mr. Washington, if he doesn't have a family now, and my cousin's abusive, where do we stay?"
Washington considered this a moment.
"Son, you'll stay with me and Martha."
"Don't call me son."
