~two months later~
"y/n do you wanna do anything special today?" josh asked as i had my head resting on his chest. "no josh, it doesnt matter that it's our six month anniversary, the only thing i ever want to do with you is sit here." his chest shook gently as he chuckled beneath me. "i'm glad i know you well enough that i decided against planning anything special."
i smiled and snuggled my head into josh's shirt. "can we take a nap?" i asked and looked up at him. he sighed and twirled his fingers in my hair, "y/n we just woke up,"
"well, i'm still tired,"
"fine i have to pee, and i'm hungry, go to sleep, i'll join you later, okay?" josh said as he pulled his fingers out of my hair and gently nudged me off of him. i play pouted and curled up under the blankets as he got up. "i'll be back soon," he said and walked over to the bathroom.
~~~
i woke up on top of josh, he had one hand in my hair and with the other, he was rubbing circles into my lower back. i turned my head and peered up at him, he was smiling widely at me. "what?" i said and furrowed my eyebrows, reaching to the bedside table next to me and grabbing my phone, looking at the time, 2:27, and stuffing it in my pocket.
"you're cute."
"yeah, and i'm hungry."
josh chuckled and wrapped his arms around my waist, carrying me as he stood up off of the bed. he set me down and intertwined our fingers, "lucky for you, i have food for us," josh said as he led me out of out bedroom and downstairs. we made it to the kitchen and there was no food set out, "where is it then?" i said and looked up at him. josh just smiled knowingly and continued leading me around to the back door. "close your eyes," he said and i sighed, closing my eyes. "i told you i didnt want anything." i said as he opened the door and led me outside to the back yard.
"open" he said and i slowly opened my eyes. the back yard was decorated like the little clearing in the woods was the day josh asked me to be his girlfriend. the fairy lights were strung up in the trees again, lanterns were strewn around in the grass (im crying happy tears), and that same damn blanket was laid out in the middle of the yard, two boxes of pizza, two bottles of doctor pepper, and a big box was set in the middle of it. "joshua," i breathed out, breath shaky as i squeezed his hand.
"lets go sit," he said and we walked over to the blanket, sitting down on the soft green plush. "before we eat, open the box." i scooted for ward and straddled the giant box. did it just... shake? no. "josh what the hell is in this box?" i asked
"just open it!" he said excitedly. i sighed and untied the ribbon that was holding it together. i pulled the top off slowly and all of a sudden,
a speckled head popped out of the box and licked my face, "holy shit what," i yelled and fell back. the dog jumped out on top of me and lied down on my chest, its nose rested right under my chin.
"this is Lucy," josh said from my left, and he reached over and scratched between the pupper's ears. "do you like her?" he asked, i could tell he was getting anxious. "no, josh, i lover he, but, the cats?" i asked as i shoved the large dog off of me and looked over at the man who made my heart stop.
josh ran a hand through his still-growing hair and scratched the back of his neck. "well... you see, while you were at work this week, i brought her home to get her used to them." he said with a small smile, his face glowing a light pink. i hugged lucy close to me before turning to josh and crawling into his lap, "thank you." i straddled his hips and kissed him, both of us smiling so much that we gave up and pulled away.
josh and i ate pizza and played with lucy until she got tired of running back and forth, chasing whatever toy she brought us next. she laid down on the blanket in front of us as the sun was setting.
josh and i were snuggled together, our toes pressed up against lucy's back as we watched the sun. "thank you for this," i mumbled against josh's shirt. "anything for you." he said and squeezed me. i felt myself dozing off again.
"y/n, before you fall asleep," he said and sat up, pulling me with him. "what now," i asked with a smile, looking up at josh. he reached into his pocket and pulled out something that shone in the colored fairy lights.
"promise ring. for us. they match, see?" he said as he held the two rings out for me to see. i felt tears brim my eyes as i looked down at them, joy filling my chest and butterflies flitting in my stomach. "josh," i said breathlessly. he took my left hand in his and lid the smaller ring with half a heart made out of diamonds on. he then slid the one with the black heart on his left ring finger. "i promise that no matter what i will always love you, and i will always be here for you, no matter what. times like the past couple months are hard, and it just made me realize how much i love you and how much it would hurt to lose you, i need you to be strong. but i promise that if you cant be strong, i'll be strong for you. not only is this our 6 month anniversary, but you've also been clean for a week. and i love you so much, i promise that will never change." josh said as tears spilled over onto my cheeks. i was speechless.
all i could do was hug him, so thats what i did. i hugged him and cried, "i dont know what to say except for thank you and i love you. so much." josh swayed us back and forth on the blanket in the middle of our backyard. "i had another idea," he whispered in my ear oncei stopped crying. "whats that?" i asked as he pulled his phone out and cluched my left hand in his, lining our fingers up so that the rings formed a heart, and snapped a picture. he dropped my hand and stood up, grabbing a string of stray snow globe fairy lights from a bush and told Lucy to sit, then wrapped them around her and snapped a picture. he picked the fairy lights back up and sat down next to me, draping them over our shoulders and turning the camera to forward facing. he held his phone up in front of us and pressed his lips to my forehead, i blushed and looked at the camera and josh snapped the picture.
"i'm telling the whole world that youre mine." he said and opened instagram.
he selected all the pictures he just took, as well as one that had all four cats sitting next to each other and looking right at him. "dont look," he said as he began typing out the caption. after a minute or so, he posted the collection and my phone vibrated. i pulled it out of my pocket and looked at the notifications.
