(Chapter 41)

*Alyssa's POV*

I stirred slightly and opened my eyes. My phone was vibrating on the table. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and looked down. Trystan was sleeping with his head in my lap. His eyes closed peacefully and his body so still that he could pass as dead. The corners of my mouth twitched upwards into a smile that shouldn't be there but immediately felt a surge of panic and nausea. I grabbed the phone trying not to rouse Trystan and spoke in a hushed tone. "Hey mum, sorry, I fell asleep." I murmured. I could hear the suspicion in her voice as she spoke. "It's okay. Listen your father and I need to sort some things in the office and might stay back late. We-I need you to keep your word and not do anything besides study, eat and sleep clear?" I forced down a groan. "I'm giving you my trust once more, Alyssa. Don't break it again. Be responsible please. Clear?" "Crystal" I muttered and then hung up. The doorbell rang at the same time and I slid Trystan's head off my lap and onto the sofa so he was completely lying down. He shifted a little, still asleep.

I opened the door and felt a wave of dismay and alarm as I saw Sydney's tear streaked face. "Hey, Aly" "Um-H-Hey! Syd, whatsup?" I popped my 'p' and cursed my bad acting skills. I should seriously go for drama classes, I've been needing it too much. "I-I just want to.. Apologise. For the way I behaved earlier when you came. I shouldn't have taken my frustration and anger on you. I'm sorry" She said with remorse and I smiled. Shit, If she saw Trystan at my place... I keep the door open only a little, so that I'm definitely blocking the couch with him from her view. "It's all cool, Syd." We stood there glancing at one another awkwardly before she asked the four words I feared. "Can I come in?" THE WORLD IS EFFING AGAINST ME! I blew a loose strand from my face. "I'm a bit tired, Syd. I'm going to sleep." It was a terrible excuse but the guilt and trepidation could not be controlled. "Did you finish all your studies?" She asked. "Um- not yet. Why?" She narrowed her already puffy eyes. "You may have bunked school but that was for something you wanted more than a child wanting to meet Santa, but that doesn't mean you don't finish your school work. Especially when you're trying to redeem yourself." She was suspicious, I could tell."W-What no! C'mon, Syd." I spoke, gripping the door till my knuckles turned white. She must've noticed because she folded her arms stubbornly. "What are you hiding?" "Nothing!" I denied indignantly. "Then let me in." She spoke calmly and my lips quivered. I was scared. Too scared.

"Alyssa?" Trystan's sleepy voice called and I shut my eyes briefly and opened them to see a shocked and horror stricken Sydney. "Who was that?" She asked but I knew she knew it was Trystan. She pushed me aside not bothering to be gentle and her eyes landed on Trystan sitting up on the couch, running his hands in his hair. "What the fuck" Sydney's voice was so quiet I almost missed it. "Syd, you have to hear me out" I began but I knew I couldn't cover this up. No story could justify what I had done to my best friend. Ever. "Sydney?" Trystan's voice was surprised. "Holy fuck, Alyssa." Sydney swore and stared at me as if I had two faces. "What's he doing here" She spat. "I-I-" My voice trembled and her eyes flashed. She knew it. "Did you two?" She gestured between us in agitation. I chewed my lip and wrung my hands. "I'm sorry, Syd. It was just a kiss! I'm sorry!" I begged. "The fuck." She stormed to the door and tears slid down my cheeks but I wiped them furiously. I wasn't going to cry. Not now. This mess was already too big.

"Just listen!" I cried and followed her to the door again. "No Alyssa. You listen. After EVERYTHING I did for you. You don't have any idea how it felt when Trystan broke up with me. And-And the reason even worse. I knew you were naive. I just never thought you were a bitch too." She slammed the door in my face, her statement slapping me like a cold bucket of water. I stood there, my mouth parted and hand on my chest trying to make sure whatever bit of my heart that was in one piece hadn't just broken too.
