Chapter seventeen:
Abby's p.o.v.
I sat up in my hospital bed. Steve was in the chair beside me.
"Abby there are three people here who want to see you," Daniel said.
"Okay," I said.
"Come in guys," Stephen said. The door opened.
"Emma, Kyle and Dan," I said.
"Hey Abby," they said.
"How are you feeling?" Dan asked.
"Much more alive than I was feeling two days ago when I came here," I said.
"At least you're starting to feel better," he said.
"Yeah, I just want to get better and go home and sleep in my own bed and eat some homemade food," I said.
"When was the last time you ate a full meal?" Kyle asked.
"When you guys were over on Wednesday," I said.
"Really?" He asked with a shocked look on his face.
"Yeah, they won't let me eat a full meal while I'm here," I said.
"Why's that?" Emma asked.
"They're worried if I eat a full meal I might get sicker than I already am," I said.
"I'm going to guess that you have no idea when you're going home yet," she said.
"The nurses won't answer me yet," I said.
"Daniel and I asked earlier today," Stephen said.
"And what did they say?" I asked.
"They said that if your blood test was good today and when they take another blood test on Sunday and if that one's good you'll be able to go home for about two weeks," he said.
"With or without medication to take?" I asked.
"With," he said.
"Okay so the earliest I'll be able to go home will be on Monday?" I asked.
"Yes, that'll be the earliest day you'll be coming home." Daniel said. I was so happy that I would be able to go home on Monday and finally start to eat homemade meals.
"When would be the earliest that I'd be going back to school?" I asked.
"The following Monday," Stephen said.
"Okay so I'll have a week off to relax," I said.
"Of course you will." Daniel said. So for me that means no school at all next week and I will most likely have a few things to get caught up on from my classes, but not a lot because I have real easy classes, meaning that it'll be easier to get caught up in.
"Oh before I forget I brought you something," Emma said. She reached into her bag and pulled out a gift bag and handed it to me. I took it from her and opened it up.
"Oh my gosh, I love it Emma thanks," I said.
"I had a feeling you would and you're welcome," she said.
"You were correct." I said. She got me a friendship necklace and some nail polish and a gift card for the mall.
"On the bright side as soon as you're all better and don't have to lay around all day, and have enough energy we can now go to the mall," she said.
"That we can." I said. I put the necklace on and Emma and I did a quick tap with our necklaces.
"Oh we got you something as well," Dan and Kyle said.
"Really?" I asked.
"Of course we couldn't deal with you being in the hospital and not buying you a get better soon card or a gift." they said. This time I noticed that Kyle had an extra big bag with him, he handed it to me, and as promised there was a get better soon card and a bunch of smaller gifts.
"So this gift is from all five of you?" I asked.
"Yes, but I got you something else as well," Steve said.
"Why thank you," I said.
"You're welcome." They said. Stephen took out another bag, and handed it to Steve. When Steve got it, he handed it to me. I opened it, surprised to find a beautiful bracelet and ring and a teddy bear.
"There's more." he said. He handed me another thing, this time it was a basket, but not just any type of basket, a picnic basket.
"Because we can't go on our dinner date, I though that I would have the nurses prepare something small and we could have our date right here in your hospital room," he said.
"Steve I love this idea, just the fact that you decided to bring it to me," I said.
"Actually your brothers helped me plan it all out, when you were sleeping last night," he said.
"Then the three of you are the best, as our Kyle, Dan and Emma," I said.
"Thanks," they all said.
"If anyone should be thanking anyone it should be me, I mean you're all here right now and staying by my side through this whole thing, and I know that it can't be easy and you're likely all wishing that you were somewhere else right now and not in some hospital," I said.
"Abby we're all here by your side because we all love you and want you to get better and besides going through something like cancer on your own can't be easy at all," Daniel said.
"You're right it's not easy, but two years ago when I was in the hospital I was going through it all by myself and no one would stay by my side," I said.
"That's exactly why we're all by your side and don't want to leave you," Emma said.
"Mostly Steve he didn't want to leave you alone at all as soon as we got here, that's why every time you've woken up since being here he's been your side," Daniel said.
"Awe thanks so much Steve," I said.
"You're welcome, I just couldn't let the youngest Richter sibling go through all of this on her own, nor could your brothers, or Dan and Kyle and your own best friend Emma. Dan, Kyle and Emma wanted to be here for the whole day yesterday and today but sadly they had to go to school," Steve said.
"Well actually I didn't go to school today," Emma said.
"Really?" I asked.
"I told my dad what had happened with you, and that Dan and Kyle and I were going to be going to the hospital after school, but instead of making me go to school he let me stay home and he took me out for ice cream to try and get my mind off of things," she said.
"Did it work?" I asked.
"For a bit it did, but then when we got home and I was left to myself my mind started to wonder off to how you were doing and yeah," she said.
"Good to know that people are thinking of me," I said.
"Of course." She said. I have to admit that it really did feel good to know that Stephen, Daniel, Kyle, Dan, Steve and Emma truly cared about me. I guess what I'm trying to say is that no one has ever cared this much about me in my whole life leading up until now. I shouldn't say that no one has ever cared a lot about me because that's a lie, up until the age of ten my parents cared so much about me and were so supportive about everything that I did, but than when they both passed away in that terrible car crash and my whole world came crashing down around me no one was there for me as soon as I was taken away from my aunt and uncles house, because I know that the Baxter family certainly did not care about me. When I ended up being adopted by the Richter family, I knew what it meant to be truly cared about, seeing as I went six years without knowing how that felt. Not having that feeling of a family caring about me destroyed me and ever sense than I've had trust issues but with the Richter family, Steve, Kyle, Dan and Emma I know what it means to be able to trust people, but I will never trust a whole lot of people in my life ever again.
