I enjoyed Induction week a lot. It was a chance to get to know other students also taking the English and Media Studies degree at Portsmouth University. Sessions that allowed me to meet people and chat with them included the Personal Tutor sessions where all the other people in the class are studying the same degree as me. Aside from this I really got to know a few people on the English side of the degree during a meet and greet between students and staff of the English department. It was and is clear to me that people come from far and wide to experience the quality teaching that many UK universities can offer, but in particular Portsmouth in that it has got a gold standard rating for teaching.
Just travelling to and from the various sessions throughout the week, some of which were in buildings not even affiliated with the English department – I found myself in the business school, the school of media and performing arts, and only found myself in the School of English at the very end of the week- was a good time to get to know my regular support worker as well as the relief ones a lot better, and even though I know they will probably only be working with me up until Christmas, I feel like I can trust them and that I can count on them as friends outside of supporting me.
Induction week was a opportunity for me to also improve my listening skills that I know will be vital during lectures, as the lecturers just talk and expect us to absorb the information like a sponge and then to ring it out in various essays.
For me though, the highlight of induction week was to visit the freshers fair which needs a whole different post of this diary blog to do it justice.
