It had been a few days since me and Eliza found out Evan's secret. Evan was acting like nothing had happened, but I could tell that was all that was on his mind. Me and Eliza didn't want to force Evan to talk about it, yet we were almost to point of exploding with suspense! We decided we were going to let Evan decide when to tell us. Lucky for us, Evan doesn't like keeping secrets. It was almost a week since the day in the library. One day me, Evan, and Eliza were all sitting outside studying, when Evan, out of nowhere brought it up."Eliza, Veronica? Can I talk to you both about something?" Evan asked us not looking up. Evan was never one to discuss feelings, so I can only imagine the butterflies swarming in his stomach.
Me and Eliza exchanged satisfied smirks and said in sync, "Of course!"
"Okay, good, its about the thestrals. I know you two well enough to know that the suspense is eating you alive!" Me and Eliza couldn't help but smile a little when he said that. "So, I guess you want me to tell the story of how I 'witnessed death'. Well, I don't know how to start this subtlety..."
"That's okay Evan, take your time." Eliza said sympathetically.
"Thanks.. Anyway, I guess how to start this would be, um, I, uh, I wasn't always an only child." I could hear my heart cracking along with Evan's voice. "I had a younger sister named, Lexi. I was four years older than her. She looked a lot like my mum. One day, when she was about 1, 1 in a half, I was sitting in her room with her, and I, uh, I looked out the window for some stupid reason-" Evan paused and turned away. "and I look back and she is choking on some small toy thing. I, only being five, had no clue what to do so I yelled for my mum but when she got there it was too late and I," Evan looked like he was about to hurt himself trying to hide his sadness. "I had to watch my little sister die in mine and my mum's arms. I was five years old, watching my sister die, because of me..." Evan buried his head in his hands. I could hear the muffled sobs as Evan stayed still with his eyes shut tight.
"Evan, it wasn't your fault. You were young and had no control over what was happening."I said as me and Eliza came closer to Evan and wrapped our arms around him.
"She could have gone to Hogwarts with me..." Evan said still trying to muffle his sadness. "She could have-"
"Evan, no. Don't think about that." Eliza said as we both were holding back our own tears for our bestest best friend. We sat for almost 15 minutes, comforting Evan and sitting with him until his eyes were no longer puffy.
"I'm sorry for bringing this up to you both. This wasn't your burden to bear." Evan said as me and Eliza finally pulled away from our hug.
"Evan, as your bestest best friends, it is our job to bear every burden you could possibly have." I said looking at Evan and meaning every word.
"Oh, well, in that case can we do something about my big burden known as hunger?" Evan said returning to his old playful self.
We all laughed and sat together watching the sun set on the black lake. In that moment I was so grateful that I had such marvelously marvelous friends!
