We stepped on to the shining grand stage. The lights blinded me for a second, but I adjusted to it to see a grand audience clapping and staring at us.

I took a deep breath as I stood and held my violin proudly.

Travis seemed ready as well. I smiled at him and he smiled at me. He whispered, "you can do it." And I nodded.

We began to play. I made a few slips but I kept on playing.

Playing in front of this audience made me happy. What I was feeling right now was indescribable.

This is part of what Kacey and I dreamed of when we were little. I wasn't quite there, but I was on my way.

As I was playing, I could hear Travis playing as well. He played so emotionally, and so well. It almost distracted me from my own playing.

It neared the end, and I wished it didn't end. For it to go on forever and ever, but this had to come to an end.

I was sweating and breathing hard when we finished. I stared at my hands that ached, and I smiled with satisfaction. Everyone clapped and I felt very happy. This is what I loved about performing.

Travis and I bowed and exited the stage. When we got back stage I couldn't help but hug Travis.

"You were amazing! Thank you so so so much!" I said as I hugged him tightly.

"Too... tight!" He said with a strangled voice as I let him go with a laugh.

He then hugged me. "I was amazing? You were the best! Thank you so much for allowing me to feel that thrill again, and to love music again." He said.

"Wait." I said as I stepped away from him. "What do you mean 'to love music again'?" I asked him.

Travis' smile faded and he started to fidget.

"I want to know." I said and Travis sighed.

"I'll tell you later. Just not here. Please?" He asked and I realized we were still backstage and let out a chuckle. "Oh right."

The place was pretty close to our house, so we were walking home. The results was going to be posted tomorrow.

Travis and I quietly walked down the sidewalk. It was still around 4, and so it was still bright.

There was a lake and Travis and I sat by as we watched the water glitter with the sunlight. It slightly waved, and it was very calming. The sun was blinding, and the birds chirped as we sat down in silence.

"I should probably tell you now." He said and I nodded.

"Remember how I said when I was little I used to live here?" He said and I nodded.

"Well even before that, I lived with my dad, and my mom in another neighbourhood," He said.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My dad slapped me, and I held my tiny hands to my face where he slapped me.
"Stop playing the piano! It's loud and doesn't even sound good." He said with a slurred speech.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I ran upstairs.
"Come back here!" He yelled. "I'm not done with you yet."
I ran into my room and locked the door behind me. I cried as my dad kept banging on the door.
As I was crying I realized the banging had stopped, and it was replaced with yelling from my parents.
At first it was them both yelling at each other, but it was soon only my father yelling.
My dad has always been an alcoholic, and hated my piano. My mom loved it when I played, because she used to play the piano as well. My dad used to love it, but soon got annoyed by it. Today, he was exceptionally drunk.
I was only 4, and I didn't know much. All I knew, was to call 911 when I needed help.
I called the police and they soon came over. My dad had hit my mother until she was unconscious.
I never met my dad ever since, and I still don't want to.
My mother and I moved into a new house. We set out for a new life. I had piano lessons every week, and my mom would always smile and pat my head when I played.
I loved it when she would praise me. That's why I played piano. For her to be proud of me.
My mom was working hard because she had to raise me by herself. She would work most of the day.
I got used to the area, and even became friends with a blue haired girl.
One day, I was waiting for my mom to come home, but she wasn't coming and it was getting late.
I ate dinner that my mom had left me and went to bed.
I woke up but my mom was still not here. I heard the doorbell ring, and I stepped onto the stool, and checked who it was through the hole.
It was my grandma, so I opened the door and was engulfed by a hug by her.
My grandmas shoulders shook as she held me.
"Let's go to grandmas house ok? Mommy won't be back." She said.
I was confused but I followed my grandma back home. I later found out that my mother was killed in a car accident.
I cried because I knew my mother wasn't there anymore. To praise me. To love me. To make me feel happy and proud.
I lived with my grandparenta, and I continued to practice piano, but my heart never felt into it. I was getting good, but every time I played, my songs sounded very empty.
I hated every school around the area. When I was 16, I decided I was old enough to live alone.
I went back to my old house where I used to live with my mom.
I hugged Travis, tears welling in my eyes. I didn't realize what he was going through.
"And then I went to school and met a beautiful girl named Katelyn." He said and I playfully slapped him on the arm and laughed.
"Let's go home. It's getting late." I said and he nodded.
I got home and was greeted by a big hug from Kacey.
"I saw you today! You did amazing!" He said as he teared up a bit. "What was it like?" He asked me and I smiled.
"It was nothing like a concert! It had the thrill of the judges watching us. It made it seem much more grand. I didn't want it to end. Ever. It made me love performing much more. Travis played so well too! Having a great accompanist and performing in front of such a big audience was amazing! It felt... ugh! It was indescribable!" I exclaimed and Kacey smiled.
"Thanks Katelyn." He said.
I smiled.
"Dinners ready!" My dad yelled from the kitchen as my brother and I walked over to the kitchen and we all ate dinner together.
