((Just wanted to say some things real quick. I probably won't be writing about Max/Mithzan after this story is over. I feel like I want to stick to Adam and the others primarily. I've also been watching a lot of Markiplier and Jacksepticeye recently and came up with a cool fanfic idea. But this one needs to get finished first. It kinda feels like no one is reading this story, so leave a comment! Tell me what your favorite part of the chapter is, or even of the whole book to this point! Thanks for reading my lil note! Enjoy!))
It turned out that you had finished your treatment at the perfect time because the tower's food supply was dwindling. Ross mentioned it the next morning and you agreed to go hunting for a bit. He asked if you wanted someone to go with you and you declined. After being showered with their love and support, you just wanted to go back out into reality and reconnect with the commonwealth. So you grabbed your things and told Ross you would be back in a few hours. He wished you luck and you left.
You walked North for about half an hour and found a bench. You took a seat and closed your eyes. This helped you focus on the sounds and smells around you. Particularly you were listening for the sounds of feral hounds or other creatures. You preferred not to eat human meat if it was avoidable. (Though you did cook up a raider once and served it to the team. They didn't know the difference.)
After sitting for almost 10 minutes, you heard a pack of hounds nearby. You snapped into action and walked a couple blocks down. That's when the pack rounded the corner. They surrounded you and one jumped up and grabbed each of your arms in their jaws. You killed the other three then managed to shake off the dogs on your arms. You had to slam one into a sign post and the other you smacked with the end of your gun. You collected all of the meat and turned towards the way you came. A man was blocking your path though. Not just any man, a courser. (You saw pictures in your handbook.)
He raised his institute pistol at you and ordered you to drop your weapon. You did as he said and raised your arms in defense. Was he going to rob you? You heard stories about these guys so you knew this guy was too strong to take down.
"I've never seen a wanderer fight like that before. You're very skilled." He narrowed his eyes at you and you knitted your eyebrows together in confusion. Did he just compliment you? While aiming a gun at you, no less?
"Tell me, where did you learn to fight like that?" He questioned. You hesitated before replying.
"Being abandoned in this world sorta makes your survival instincts kick in I guess." You shrugged. He stepped closer cautiously, the leather of his armor squeaked as he moved.
"Come with me." He said, stepping closer. Not like you had a choice? Once he got close enough, he put his gun back on his hip and wrapped an arm awkwardly around your shoulders then pushed some buttons on his watch. A big lightning bolt came down from the sky and enveloped you both, your vision turned white. Once the white disappeared, a room was revealed. 'Teleportation?! Am I in the institute?!' You wondered. You tried to move forward but stumbled forward. The courser placed a hand on your shoulder to steady you.
Once standing upright again, he began to lead you around a small computer desk and out to an elevator. Once on the third floor, he led you to an office. The institute looked so...futuristic. It was such a huge contrast to the commonwealth you couldn't help but look around in awe. He knocked and received an "enter." Inside, sitting at a desk was an older man.
"Father, I returned the synth and on the way back I saw this girl. Her fighting was unlike anything I've ever seen. I believe she would be a valuable asset." He explained. You stared at him. Valuable asset? Is this guy for real?
"You know how much I trust your opinion, so if you say she's good, I think I'll offer her the recently opened position. What do you say girl? Would you like to become a courser?"
