The next morning, as you expected the kids both came to you begging to begin their shooting lessons. You told them Red was returning so you guys couldn't do much until you were sure no other settlements needed your help. But you agreed to start teaching them about their guns. So you took them into the gun range and told them to take their guns and sit at the table. They did so quietly and quickly.
"Okay guys. First rule of using any gun. Always pretend it's loaded. Even if you know there isn't a single bullet in the gun, you need to treat it as if it's loaded. Never point it at someone as a joke, or threat unless you would not mind actually hurting them."
Your words brought back flashes of memories from when Max got so mad at you that he pointed a gun at you. You remember staring at his red, tear-stained cheeks. Seeing with each word more tears spilling from his eyes.
"Mom!" You blinked harshly and inhaled sharply. Your attention focused on the kids once again.
"Yes. Right, and the second rule...don't put your finger on the trigger unless you're ready to shoot." You continued. "Next, you two need to be aware at all times what your target is and what's behind or around it. That's a good general rule for when you're out in the commonwealth too. Always know where you are, and assess possible escape routes." Suddenly a knock on the door sounded and you went to open it.
"Hey general! I have some letters for you!" Red smiled.
You thanked him and took the envelopes from his hand. You glanced down at the two letters and noticed one was from President Aphmau. Red left and you returned to the kids.
"Kids I'm going to get Adam. He will finish your lesson for today. No shooting until I get back, understood?" You asked.
"Yes ma'am!" They smiled.
You went downstairs and found Adam, then instructed him on what teach the kids about. Once in your office, you sat at your desk and opened your letters. The one from President Aphmau came first. It was an official request that you return the soldiers to the Lieutenant immediately because she was very unhappy. Jess explained that the Lieutenant was rampaging all over and throwing tantrums. Jess ended the letter by writing, "This is urgent general. Please return the soldiers and peace to our town. That will be all."
You immediately tossed the letters aside and left your office to go find Morgan and Evan. You explained the situation to them and they agreed hesitantly to gather their belongings and move back to the town. In approximately 20 minutes they were packed and waiting by the door. You told Max where you were going and he decided to join you. So off you went, making quick time of the journey and arriving at the gates of the town. Zane, one of the watchers at the gate saw you all and quickly opened the gate.
You all walked inside and went to the military house, noting the shattered windows and glass laying on the ground. Jess wasn't joking about the tantrums. Inside, you found the lieutenant sitting at her desk. Her head resting in her hands. She looked in rough shape, and you felt a pang of guilt. After all you had no clue that taking her soldiers would stress her out like this. You decided to walk closer.
"Hey lieutenant, I brought back your--" She grabbed you by the throat and slammed you into the wall. Your eyes widened and hands went to the one around your throat. You stared into her dark, tired eyes.
"You...you little snot! Who do you think you are?! I can't imagine why you thought it was okay to take MY soldiers without asking!! Without them, I have nothing!!" She yelled, specks of spit flying from her mouth and landing on your cheek. You flinched and watched her raise her fist to strike you...
