It was11:30 p.m., half an hour before New Year. I was getting excited since I’d betting spending it at a friend’s house for the first time. I was going with the girls, Kean, and Matt.
Kean drove us to the venue and by the time we have arrived, it was already 11:45. This party seems more like a gathering of my high school friends.
My objective for tonight is to have fun and make the most of my first new year together with my friends. Believe it or not, it was also my first time going to a party with red cups, the one that you use when drinking liquor at a party. People would probably think that I’m a loser if they knew that. But at least I’ve had my first true drink when I was already eighteen. It was legal. Okay, screw it. This whole thing is actually dumb.
The countdown was about to start and everybody started gathering and filling up the room. The lights were turned off one by one.
“What’s happening?!” I asked Matt, who was standing beside me.
He was yelling at the top of his lungs but I was barely able to hear him since the speakers were blaring. “When the clock strikes twelve, you’ve got to kiss anyone in front of you!”
My eyes widened in terror, thankfully the lights were all out. “What?! But I can’t see anyone!”
“That’s the point!” he yelled, trying to surpass the noise around us. “It’s where the fun begins!”
What the hell?! How could I not know about this? I could run away from this but there’s not much time left.
“Five, four, three, two, one. Happy New Year!!!”
This was the part of the night where I’d be randomly kissing whoever was in front of me. I didn’t even know who was standing near be besides Matt. Reality was hard to escape at this moment.
Someone held my face and I closed my eyes, feeling the person’s breath on my face. He was coming closer and I was silently praying I wouldn’t faint in the middle of the kiss.
Our lips met and I was surprisingly taking his lead. The kiss was gentle but there was passion. Heat spread all over my body as I soon moved my hands, wrapping it around his neck.
He broke the kiss first and I suddenly felt alone. My lips started to part as I slowly breathed in. The absence of those lips made my heartbeat slower its pace.
The lights were finally turned on and it was the time for me to look for the owner of those lips. But as I looked around, none of them cared about me. Everybody was just laughing and smiling like it was nothing. But that kiss couldn’t just be nothing, right?
To my dismay, nobody in the room seemed to own those lips, so I left to get some air outside.
I was quite far from the place and it was dark. I could still hear the faint music from behind me. There were fireworks and I smiled. It looked so pretty in the night the sky, filling it with colors.
As I turned around, I immediately stood frozen in my place. There were many things that were running in my head right now and my head started to throb. I was trying to register what was happening.
It took me awhile before I finally understood what was going on. Drake was back from Brazil and he’s standing right now in front of me. It was too hard to believe. It has been years and right now he has popped out of nowhere.
“Happy New Year.” His voice was soft and deep. I was studying everything about him. His shoulders broadened and he’s got biceps. With the plain white v-neck shirt he’s wearing, I could guess he’s got abs already. I wanted to touch and know how many it was. Four? Six? Eight?
“I miss you,” were the only words I could utter.
“Me too.”
He didn’t say much. Instead, he showed me how much he has missed me. He held my face and slowly, he kissed like it was so full of meaning; so soft but full of passion.
As he broke the kiss, I felt the kind of emptiness I’ve felt earlier. This time I wasn’t craving for more… because I knew this was this guy who owned those lips.
“I kissed someone before you,” I told him and was trying my best not to laugh.
He just nodded and smirked. “He was hot.”
Still the same old, egoistic idiot. “You didn’t change.”
“If you’re talking about my attitude, then yes I haven’t. But if you’re talking about my body, babe it has—“
I cut him off, “Okay, enough. Enough. Let’s just go back in the house. I’m sure everybody’s dying to see you again.”
Drake laughed and held my hand. I’ve never felt so alive in five years. I’m so happy that Drake’s back. I could still remember back then I was a damsel in distress with so many knights fighting and looking after me. But in the end, there’s always gotta be that one person who’s gonna stand out. At last, my fairy tale story was complete!
