orbit

some people are like sunshine
bright and burning and wonderful
warming up your heart and
shining light on all the good things
in life. (in them. in you.)

we surround them like planets
orbiting and orbiting
staying as close as we can
and when they orbit around you
it's the most beautiful thing:

life is warm and bright and nice
and you orbit each other
kind and peaceful and happy
you understand them perfectly
and they seem to know you, too
there's never an argument
never a falling out

i like to be mercury
orbiting the sun so closely
basking in its light

"stay close to people
who feel like sunshine,"
they say
don't become thrown
out of orbit —
you'll be cold and bitter
and desperately searching
for warmth.

maybe i'm full of
moonbeams instead.
maybe i'm the moon
and we are in a
temporary eclipse
destined to
be apart once again.

i will cherish the sunlight
while it lasts
and i will try my best
to return it

some people are like sunshine
and i am so grateful
that i am orbiting so many suns
(and that one of them is you.)
