Nishant was discussing the Chawla project with Naresh Naik, Vikrant and Dhruv when a loud knock on the door interrupted him. The moment he instructed the person to come inside, Kalpana, the Head of HR walked in.
"Sir, Aparna Mathur's resignation letter?" she asked looking at him expectantly.
Nishant got up from the sofa and walked to his table. Then, opening his laptop bag, he pulled out the letter and handed it over to her.
He went back to the meeting, seeing Kalpana leave, but was again interrupted by her.
"Sir, I believe you forgot to sign the letter," she said, handing the letter to him.
Nishant stretched out his hand and took the letter from her. Then he picked up the pen and signed his name after writing accepted.
"Kalpana, make sure all the formalities are done within 24 hours. And, ask payroll to release 2 months of her salary along with all her dues."
"But Sir, she is on a contract."
"I'll take care of that, Kalpana," Dhruv said butting in the conversion.
Kalpana nodded and went out of the room.
Dhruv looked at Nishant who was looking blankly at the projector screen. Then suddenly he blinked his eyes and continued with the meeting. Dhruv sighed and concentrated on the meeting knowing well that his friend was trying his best to keep it as normal as possible on the outside, but he was burning like hell inside.
****************
Prakriti came running at Aparna as she saw her near the school gate.
"Mama, I made an elephant today. And, the teacher said it looked like a real one."
Aparna smiled at her as she took the school bag from her. For a minute, she forgot all the woes and concentrated on her daughter's happy chatter.
Prakriti was bounding ahead of her with a spring in her step when suddenly she stopped and squealed with joy. She started to run towards a car standing ahead.
"Prakriti, wait!" Aparna shouted but stopped short when she saw two familiar faces getting down from the car.
Her eyes narrowed as she recognised them and then the car. She had seen this car some days ago outside the house and then at Prakriti's school also.
As the two men came towards her with Prakriti bounding happily between them, she frowned.
"Hello Ma'am!" Avinash said smiling sheepishly.
"What are you guys doing here?" Aparna asked, looking from him to Keshav.
"Actually, Nishant Sir asked us to be here to ward off the media," Keshav replied trying not to look at her frowning face.
"Where is Nishant Uncle?" Prakriti suddenly asked drawing their attention.
Avinash was about to answer when Aparna suddenly started to drag her off towards the cottage. The moment she reached it, Prakriti squirmed away from her grip and started to run towards the security men again.
"PRAKRITI!" her voice boomed in the valley making her stop in her tracks.
As Aparna gestured her to come back, she saw her daughter slowly tracing her steps back.
"Open the door and go inside," she commanded giving the keys to her daughter.
Then, Aparna turned towards the security men and said in an authoritative voice, "You guys can leave. And, tell Mr Naik that we don't require his security."
Saying this, she turned and went inside the cottage. But the moment her eyes fell on Prakriti's crestfallen expression, she regretted being so harsh.
"Sweetheart, I have made your favourite sandwich. Wait, I'll get it for you."
"I don't want it," Prakriti said in an angry voice and went inside the bedroom.
Sighing, Aparna kept the sandwich down on the table and was about to go inside when the door bell attracted her attention.
She opened the door and found a courier guy standing with a letter in her name. Mechanically, she signed and took the letter from him.
Closing the door, she turned the letter and looked at the envelope, and instantly her eyes widened with recognition.
Naik Builders!
She opened the envelope and pulled out the contents. Opening the letter, she read through it.
They had accepted her resignation with immediate effect and also given her an experience certificate. But what shook the earth beneath her feet was the cheque of two and a half lakhs.
She collapsed on a dining chair as her gaze fell on the distinctive scrawl of his signature on the cheque.
That night Aparna sat down near the window thinking what she should do with the money. She was still thinking about it when she felt her daughter's soft hands on her shoulder.
"Yes, sweetheart?" Aparna asked taking her in her arms.
Prakriti looked up with sweet innocent eyes of hers and said softly, "Mama, I miss him. Do you?"
Aparna looked at her daughter whose eyes were brimming with tears. She engulfed her in a motherly embrace.
I am sorry, sweetheart. This is one question that I cannot answer.
As Prakriti slowly went off to sleep in her arms, Aparna knew exactly what she needed to do with the money.
***************
It had been more than 2 weeks since her resignation and Nishant still remembered the feeling of seeing the letter for the first time. A desolate and painful ache that had become a part of his life since that ill-fated night started to engulf him as he sat up on the sofa in the bedroom. Since the time she had left, he had stopped sleeping in the bed. Now as he stared at it, he could only see them together sleeping with arms twined like a vine. He closed his eyes trying to block the vision but instead his eyes started to burn.
Nishant got up from the sofa and went inside the washroom. As the warm water pelted down his body, he felt a little relaxed and then suddenly her hands started to caress him everywhere. Little by little his body heated up with the rising tell-tale sensations. He wanted to open his eyes to look but just couldn't.
Suddenly as her hands closed on his manhood, his eyes opened with a jolt and he found himself all alone. Cursing under his breath, he turned the warm water off and opened the cold one. The moment the water touched his body, it jerked and he clenched his teeth hard, letting the harsh coldness douche out the rousing sensations.
