Madhu looked at the mail and almost exclaimed with joy. Oh, this is perfect! Quickly, she forwarded the email to Aparna's id. Before even the mail showed delivered, she sent a message to her telling her to reply to the mail with her updated resume. Then, she picked up her laptop and walked towards the conference room for the meeting.
Even though, Nishant was looking at the screen but still his whole attention was concentrated on the keys, which had fallen from the woman's hand in his car that night. He was not able to shake off the heady sensations in his body every time he thought about those fingers brushing across his arm. Sighing, Nishant tried to control the tell-tale hardening of his loins. Not now, I am in a meeting, he tried to tell his body but failed miserably.
"Nishant, Nishant?" Vikrant called him but his brother's eyes were transfixed on the paper lying in front of him.
Nishant felt his brother shake him hard.
"What?"
"Mohan is asking you something? Would you care to answer him?" Vikrant said looking irritated.
Sighing, Nishant tried to pull all his energies to concentrate on the meeting.
Aparna saw Madhu's message in the afternoon when she finally returned to office after being at the site all morning. Opening her mail, she checked the details and forwarded her updated resume. The package was good and the location perfect for her.
Closing her eyes, she tried hard to remember where she had dropped her house keys but still nothing. All she remembered was a sharp sensation of wet tendrils of hair against her palm. She looked at her fingers and still felt the heat of the skin against the tips. That same sensation had not left her even when she had slept off after the exhausted day at work. Her dreams for once had not been about her bad experiences but about that arm circling her cosily. She had felt its warmth all the way to her soul and after a long time she had slept peacefully without waking up with fright.
What the hell! What are you thinking? These things are not for you, Aparna. You have a daughter and you are a divorcee. How can you even think about these things? Stop it before it's too late.
Wasn't once enough for you?
Aparna shook her head hard to let go of the things circling inside her mind. It's better to concentrate on the job at hand; she thought to herself and started to work on a design on the laptop.
2 months later
Madhu pressed the car horn with her full might trying to beckon Aparna to hurry up. It was first day in the new office and she cannot be late. She saw her rushing down the stairs trying not to fall. Not bad, she was wearing a blue coloured saree.
"Nice!" Harish observed looking at Aparna.
"It's not fair, Appy," said Madhu trying to make a face.
"It's not my fault if your husband has eyes for another woman," Aparna said sliding inside the car.
Harish smiled at both of them knowing them too well. They were best of friends and Aparna was much level headed than Madhu if not the courageous one.
Aparna placed a reassuring hand on her stomach trying to soothe the butterflies. New job, new office, new responsibilities, new people and yes a new boss. Smiling she thought to herself that how time can change everything. 3 years ago, she had joined at junior level in architecture and now she would be heading it in Naik Builders. Again, she couldn't thank Madhu more for forwarding the application at the right moment.
As the car neared the huge building of Naik Builders at Connaught Place, Aparna felt the butterflies in her stomach jump up and down. Even though the building had brilliant structure and design but it looked imposing. However, on a personal note, she wanted to meet the architect who had designed it this exquisite piece.
She entered the building with Madhu, who was smiling from ear to ear.
"I am so happy you are going to work here," she said clutching Aparna's arm affectionately.
Smiling at her, Aparna stepped out to a floor, which looked like the HR department. Handing her over to the Kalpana, the HR head, Madhu said her byes and left.
One hour later, once Aparna was done with the form filling, Kalpana led her to meet the team she would be heading. They were all young and energetic people, who welcomed her with warm smiles. She was showed inside her cabin and told to wait for her meeting with the boss.
Aparna flicked through the different design diaries lying in her cabin while she waited. No doubt, Naik Builders were the best in the country: their designs were impeccable. She was still checking the designs when Shivang, her assistant knocked and then peaked through the open door.
"Ma'am, Sir is waiting for you."
Acknowledging him with a smile, she picked up her laptop bag and followed him.
It was 11 in the morning and Nishant was tired like hell. He had been on an onsite meeting for a hotel being constructed at Gurgaon. He took off his coat and rolled up his sleeves. Going inside the washroom on his office, he splashed water on his face repeatedly trying to take away the tiredness from his eyes.
Nothing can take away it from your face and eyes if you don't sleep at night, he heard his mind say. Yes, sleep had eluded him since the night of his engagement. Alcohol, sleeping pills, nothing was helping. He kept on dreaming those sensations that woman had roused in him.
Shaking his head, he wiped his face and exited the washroom. The moment he entered his office, he saw Shivang standing with a woman clad in blue saree.
Shivang turned and Nishant's eyes rested on the woman. He couldn't look away as his gaze was transfixed on the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen in his life. But as he looked on, he felt there was something in them, which made them the most desolate ones too.
Forget her, Nishant. You need to look for the woman who touched you and one in front is definitely not the same.
"Sir, this is Aparna Mathur," Shivang said introducing her.
Aparna looked at him and found his eyes surveying her. Feeling exposed, she looked away at Shivang and smiled.
Nodding, he looked at both of them and went out. As the door clicked shut, Nishant came near her.
"Nishant Naik," he said extending his hand.
Smiling timidly, Aparna clasped his hand and her face lighted up with recognition.
It's him.
Nishant's fingers tightened around her palm as the sensations haunting him for the past months zipped through his brain. Realisation hit him as the heat of her palm emanated to his.
