Aparna rushed outside and froze.

A man in black clothes was standing in front Madhu clutching her throat and pressing her against the wall.

Aparna's blood rushed against her heart and then it started to thud with a disturbing intensity.

As her friend's screams just filled the air, she saw him dragging her towards the wall by her neck.

Harish rushed out of his bedroom towards Madhu but stopped the moment he saw the man's face.

Aparna clutched the door frame for support not knowing what to do. All of sudden the strength in her limbs was completely gone. She tried to move but couldn't. Everything started to whirl around her and she stared ahead transfixed.

"I want her."

The voice rang in her head, scaring her to the core.

Kavin!

As he turned, he pulled Madhu in front of him and pointed a knife at her throat.

A cold shiver ran down Aparna's spine as she looked at the scene ahead. Fear clogged her throat making her speechless. She could do nothing but stare.

"Get the child," Kavin commanded gesturing to Harish.

Harish again advanced towards him but backed off as he pressed the knife at Madhu's throat.

"I'll kill your wife if you don't get the child."

Aparna looked at Madhu, who stared back, her eyes pleading her not to. Then, she looked at Harish and gestured him to get Prakriti.

"No ways, Aparna," Harish shouted back at her.

She closed her eyes and tried to think but her fear engulfed mind could do nothing but cringe with panic. As it took over her brain completely, she was again standing in that flat with Kavin hitting her, abusing her physically. She was again the same Aparna, who had watched her child being slapped brutally by this man. But still, she couldn't do anything.

"Mama?"

Aparna's eyes flashed open as she heard her daughter's frightened call from the hiding place.

"Get her now or I'll slit her throat," she heard Kavin say to Harish.

Completely helpless, Harish slowly picked up Prakriti from behind the door of his bedroom.

"Bring her here."

Slowly Harish walked towards Kavin who was smiling like a devil, clearly basking in the glory of winning again.

Aparna just watched all the drama unfold in front of her but couldn't do a thing. Let alone do, she wasn't even able to budge from her place.

"Will you let him do this to you again?" she heard a familiar voice whisper in her ear.

As her eyes adjusted against the blur of her tears, she saw Nishant move away from behind and stand against the wall to her left.

She just stared at him not knowing how to react.

Was he blaming her for what was happening now?

But why?

Was this all because of her?

But how?

Wasn't she supposed to be the victim?

Yes, you are, but not Kavin's but of your own fears. You know you can fight but you won't, she heard her mind tell her.

Everything whirled around her and suddenly she remembered something Nishant had said to her.

"Fight because you have to: because you need to."

Think Aparna, what do you want more than fear, what do you need more?

I want to smash his head. I need to protect my daughter and friend.

She looked sideways and saw Nishant smiling at her. He just shook his head to the side beckoning her to do what she was thinking.

Suddenly, all that fear, all that terror and all the past blockages in her head just vanished in a matter of seconds and animosity flooded her mind and body.

"It's me you want, and you will get what you want," she said looking straight at the man who had almost ruined her.

Aparna smiled inwardly as she saw Kavin's eyes shining with anticipation as she moved towards him slowly.

She came and stood in front of him and stared back with defiance.

"Let her go."

But Kavin did not. Instead, he just moved sideways suddenly and grabbed Prakriti from Harish's arms.

Aparna just stared with horrified eyes at her daughter squirmed and screamed violently. But within a split second the emotion of fear got replaced with something more potent.

Anger!

"Sweetheart, mama is here. Nothing is going to happen to you," she told Prakriti, who calmed down a little but did not stop crying.

"How will you save her, wifey? I will take her with me. She is going to fetch me a lot of money. And, you also," Kavin replied, his filthy hands grabbing Prakriti tightly.

For a minute, Aparna's courage diminished. Who is going to save them?

She looked at Harish and Madhu, who looked as scared as her.

Then, suddenly she felt his scent all around her again and his voice reverberated in her ears.

"You have yourself. You don't need anyone."

Maybe it was his voice or maybe it was the trauma of all these years: whatever it was, it again tightened her spine rigidly.

"Harish, call the police."

Hearing her, Kavin started to laugh and it increased with every passing second.

When he stopped, he saw Aparna staring at him with the same defiant look.

"So, you think the police can stop me? Well, call them. You call them and I'll throw your daughter," he said raising Prakriti high in the air.

Aparna eyes narrowed with hostility and she stepped a little forward and saw him move further away. Somehow anticipating his move, she gestured Harish to call the police.

The moment he started to dial, Kavin threw Prakriti in the air and Aparna moved with lightning speed to catch her falling child. But as she caught hold of her, she felt the slash of a sharp blade in her mid back.

Gritting her teeth, she held onto Prakriti and steadied her. As she handed the frightened and crying child to Madhu, she touched her cheeks reassuring her.

And then, she turned towards Kavin, who was laughing at the top of his voice.

He grabbed her and put the knife to her throat.

"There's no man to save you now. I am the only man you have."

Something erupted inside Aparna the moment she heard him.

"I don't need a man to save me. I am man enough to save myself."
