Before it got to my turn, I was already getting terrified. Out of the forty-nine people, only two people had come out smiling. The fact that they were even smiling didn't mean they hadn't been embarrassed there. Maybe they were just smiling to calm themselves down or to probably make people think they were outstanding.
When the man finally called for me, the fiftieth contestant, I swallowed hard and then, my body began to shake. The fear that I never felt even when other people left crying enveloped me totally. Slowly, I made my way to the door, fiddling with the edge of my gown.
It seemed as if the man noticed my pale face because he smiled at me and said ,"Good luck"
I nodded and walked into the dreadful room. The size of the room scared me. It had high ceilings and the windows were really high. At first, I thought I would faint, but when I saw four faces staring at me, I quickly stood up right and cleared my throat without making too much noise.
Then, my next battle began. How would I start my presentation? My legs began to quiver and for a moment, I thought they had turned to jell. Sweat beads formed on my forehead and my mouth went dry.
"Don't you have something to present?" a man barked. He was probably the 'he' that every other contestant talked about.
"I'm here to present a song titled Forever." I paused and looked at their faces, waiting for that to sink in. Then, the man that talked earlier began to tap his foot on the ground impatiently. Oh God, what was I going to do? I was too scared to sing. I looked at the other people by the table and swallowed hard. They were giving me a 'are you okay?' look.
"I hope you like my song", I said, trying to buy time.
"Go to the point, Miss Adams", another man with brown hair said.
My eyes widened. How did he know my name? After seconds of thinking, I realized that he had my file.
I closed my eyes shut. Looking at them would only make me croak instead of sing. "Being with you forever makes me tingle to the toes...i feel like I'm riding on the clouds...forever with my baby girl, I just want to love you. Foreeeever.... "
I opened my eyes and to my surprise, my cheeks were wet with tears. I'd been crying. I was just so going to lose this. I looked at the people sitting by the table, waiting for them to say something.
"Felicity, huh...you did well", one man that had been quiet throughout said.
I felt a smile curve my lips. He said I did well. I can't really believe it.
"Tch...did well?" the 'he' started. "You are bad at composing yourself and it's obvious that you have stage fright. Your song was terrible, okay? I don't know why Scott is deceiving you, but I'll be honest with you. You need training."My face fell. I blinked hard to hold back my tears. Crying here would just make his ego bigger. "Thank you",I said, smiling to hide my anger. I noticed the disappointment that flashed in his eyes, but he recovered quickly.
"Felicity, we'll get back to you later",Scott said.
I bowed my head slightly. "Thank you for listening." With that, I walked out of the room, calmly. When I got out, I fell to the floor, breathing heavily. My eyes shuttered close and I held my head in my hands.
"How was it, miss?" the announcer man asked, smiling down at me.
"It was huh...it was... " I couldn't continue. I broke down into tears, my shoulders shaking violently. The man knelt beside me and patted my back. "It's okay. Let's just wait for the results."
I looked up at him and smiled weakly at him. "Thank you, sir. "
"I'm Collins, Felicity."
"You know my name?"
He chuckled. "I'm in charge of all the participants." With that, he stood up and walked away, leaving me with more hope than before.
Standing up, I dusted the back of my dress and walked towards my car to see my parents, glaring at me. "Mom, dad, what are you doing here? "
"Ask me one more time, Felicia. You know you're a really stubborn child, right? I told you not to come here but what do you do?"
"Did Sharon tell you this?" I asked as my hands balled into fists, thinking of how I would deal with Sharon when this was solved.
"Apologize immediately!" my daddy barked. "Just know this. You won't sing here even if you eventually get employed. I'll see to that even if that is the last thing I get to do."
I rolled my eyes. "Daddy, you aren't letting me live my life. I'm nineteen and the last thing I need is you ordering me about. I hate the fact that I have to depend on you for everything."
My daddy laughed without humor. That meant he was getting angrier by the minute. "I'll leave you, Felicia. Do whatever you want with your life. Thank goodness, I have Samuel. He won't disappoint me."
"I won't disappoint you, okay? Besides, I'm your legitimate child. Stop comparing me to that child you adopted. Samuel is just six years, please",I said, slightly raising my voice.
Immediately I finished talking, my parents walked to their car and drove away. I looked back at the building where I had just been auditioned. I really needed the job.
Minutes later, I got behind the wheel of my car and dialled Sharon's number. She picked up on the third ring.
"Hello, Felicity. How was that audition of yours?"
"How does that concern you? Despite the way I begged you not to tell my parents about me going for the audition, you still went ahead to run your mouth, not thinking of how it would affect me."
"Are you done running your mouth?" she said, emphasizing the your.
"W-what?" I stuttered.
"I did it for your good." With that, she hung up leaving me angrier than I was before I called her. I tossed the phone angrily on the passenger seat and started the engine. I didn't just know why none of my friends ever supported me.
I hissed under my breath and then, as I rounded a corner, a car ran into mine- a head-on collision. I began to snort contemptuously. I was so going to kill the person that hit my lovely car.
I opened my car door and marched towards the other car. The windows were tinted so I couldn't really see the driver. I knocked the window hastily and signalled with my finger that he or she should get out.
After about two minutes, the door opened, revealing a guy that looked so familiar. He had black hair and blue eyes that had me almost swooning. I swallowed hard and frowned, getting angry with myself. "Hello."
My mouth popped open. What did I just say? I was supposed to pour out my anger.
"Hello", he replied, looking at me, probably confused that I wasn't yelling at him.
I nodded. "You are surely going to pay damages for the havoc you have just caused. " I pointed at my car and the dent on the front side made me angrier.
"What did you say?" he asked, talking slowly.
I glared at him. "Pay me-"
"Yeah, I got that. I should be the one asking for damages", he said with his voice slightly raised.
