"Really? Bellamy, you really believe this crap?" Murphy asked, looking past Clarke's short figure to where the Blake brother stood next to Hazel, who had an unfamiliar look in her eyes. Murphy slightly shook his head at her, as if to say he did not do it. Letting out a grateful sigh of relief, Hazel nodded. They shared a look of understanding. Hazel wouldn't let anything happen to him. She would at least try her best to protect and defend him.
Clarke continued, "You threatened to kill him. We all heard you. You hated Wells."
"Plenty of people hated Wells. His father was the Chancellor that locked us up," Murphy answered, his confidence growing as Hazel moved from Bellamy's side to his. She wanted to be ready just in case someone tried something and figured Murphy's best chance would be if she were by his side.
The blonde did not seem to notice the arrival of Hazel as she went on, "Yeah, but you're the only one who got in a knife fight with him."
Murphy nodded, "Yeah, I didn't kill him then, either." The dirty blonde looked around anxiously at the growing crowd who seemed to believe Clarke over the lanky brunette.
Hazel crossed her arms, trying her best to appear intimidating. It did not seem to do much seeing as Octavia yelled, "Tried to kill Jasper, too." This made Hazel's confidence sway. She looked to her best friend nervously, knowing that the situation was only getting worse and worse for him. This wasn't going to end well.
"Murphy, where were you last night?" Bellamy noticed the shakiness of Hazel's voice as she asked that. She was now no longer confident in him, no matter how much she tried to be. It didn't make sense. Hazel couldn't find him last night and that was around the exact same time frame that Wells was murdered.
"Come on. This is ridiculous. I don't have to answer to you. I don't have to answer to anyone," Murphy scowled, shooting his best friend a look of disbelief. He was astounded by the fact that she was unsure about whether or not he was a murderer. How could she just turn her back on him?
Bellamy stepped forward, "Come again?" The male Blake had only stepped up because of the hurt look on Hazel's face and because of the shot toward his pride. She felt her chest tighten and her palms began to sweat—two of the major warning signs that her anxiety was growing.
"Bellamy, look, I'm telling you, man. I didn't do this."
"Then where were you last night?" Hazel asked again. She really wanted to believe him but was finding it extremely hard to. All of the evidence was pointing against him.
Bellamy spoke over her, "They found his fingers on the ground with your knife."
Clarke turned to the crowd, "Is this the kind of society that we want? You say there should be no rules. Does that mean that we can kill each other without. . . without punishment?" Hazel's eyes widened with panic as the blonde began to hype up the hundred. If they became angry, Hazel wouldn't stand a chance in protecting her best friend. And even though she wasn't sure if he were innocent, she'd still do anything to protect him.
"I already told you. I didn't kill anyone," Murphy tried defending himself again.
Someone in the crowd suggested, "I say we float him."
Hazel's head snapped in the general direction the words came from in surprise. Float him? As in kill him?
Everyone agreed, wanting to witness Murphy dead. "That's not what I'm saying," Clarke weakly said. She didn't realize that consulting the angry mob was a mistake. A mistake that was about to cost Murphy his life.
"Why not? He deserves to float. It's justice," Connor spoke up, earning a glare from Hazel. The male was only saying that because he despised Murphy and was jealous of the amount of power he had as Bellamy's right hand man.
