"You sure about this?" Monty asked as both he and Jasper stared at the long needle filled with anesthesia. That sharp point was about to go into the latter boy's neck and neither of them were ready for that. "Look at her. I know you like her, but her blood is about to go into your body."
As Monty continued to try to talk his best friend out of the procedure, Jasper requested, "Do you mind if Hazel pokes me with that instead? I mean, we just met. . . not that I don't trust you or anything, it's just—"
Dr. Tsing did her best to stop from rolling her eyes and instead gave a tight-lipped smile as she said, "Whatever makes you more comfortable."
The doctor handed the needle off to a waiting Hazel who had been holding onto Maya's limp hand. The beeping sound from the machines hooked up to the female started to rapidly increase, causing panic to fill the room. Maya's body began to seize, the radiation obviously too much for her to handle even unconscious.
"What is it? What's happening?"
The older doctor looked to Hazel and ordered, "We need to do this now!"
The dirty blonde nodded in response as Monty tried one last time to sway his best friend's decision. "I can't just let her die!" Jasper cut him off before he could persuade him against the procedure even further. The tall and lanky brunette looked to Hazel and nodded, "Let's do this."
The medic nodded with a grim smile, grimacing as she said, "This is gonna sting a little."
When she poked the needle into her friend's neck, he cried out, "Ow! A little?"
Hazel couldn't help but smirk, though she did feel bad for the small, white lie she told. The tall brunette went to say something but then stopped, blinking slowly and flinching as if he had been hit with something.
"What is it? What's wrong?" Monty asked as the dirty blonde let out a quiet giggle. He shot Hazel a look of confusion before the patient himself spoke up.
"Nothing. I feel nice."
The dirty blonde grinned, turning to Monty as she said, "I just hooked him up with some really up-to-snuff narcotics."
As Dr. Tsing finished switching on the machine that would transfer Maya's blood into Jasper's body, she went into a further explanation of the beginning of the procedure. "Maya's been heavily sedated. You will—of course—feel that, too. It's perfectly normal."
Hazel was too busy laughing at Jasper's dazed expression to notice the slip in Lorelei's words, but Monty did. "If you've never done this before, how do you know?"
Dr. Tsing's heart skipped a beat before she calmly stated, "You're right. I should have said: it's to be expected. This will take a while. Why don't you head back to your room? I'll send for you once he's awake."
But because Monty was a good friend and did not trust the Mount Weather doctor enough to take her advice, he pulled out a seat and stationed himself at Jasper's side.
The mocha-skinned doctor shrugged before turning to Hazel, "I would appreciate it if you would go tell her family. I'm sure Mr. Vie is worried sick, and I know you're. . . close with her cousin."
Hazel pursed her lips awkwardly before nodding and taking off, barely sparing Monty a glance as she left quarantine.
Meanwhile, kilometers away from Mount Weather, the boy who shared some of the same blood as Hazel was also running around in search of someone. While the dirty blonde searched for Maya's relatives, Finn was looking for his friends. Or, more specifically, the woman he loved.
"I told you, we don't have your people," a bulky built man said, holding his hands up in submission from his kneeling position on the ground. Nyko recognized the glint in the shaggy-haired male's eyes and knew something had been taken from him. It reminded him of the day that he took his grandchild away from his daughter, one of his biggest regrets.
