Saving Windfall (MXM)

Chapter One: Pack Duties

~Russell's POV~

I leap off the front porch of the Windfall pack mansion, transforming into my Wolf form in mid-air. Running into the forest, I start looking for food, enjoying the rush of wind in my fur.

My coat is all black except for the tip of my ears and tail along with a small patch of white on my chest which looks like a wolf's canine tooth. My Human eyes are blue, but when I shift, they turn to a slightly glowing purple color.

To explain the purple, every Alpha in every pack has a special color to tell others and pack members they are Alpha. I by no means am Alpha yet, I am just next in line. For every other pack member, their eyes just get brighter and glow a little as mine do.

Focusing, I close my eyes and perk up my ears to listen to the sounds around me. I bypass the sounds of small animals until I hear an antelope walking around. Following the sound quietly, I manage to sneak up on the animal.

A sudden roar rings out, then in the next moment, I hear bones breaking and a choked off screeching noise.

'You ass, that was mine,' I say to the Shifter through the pack's mind link with a playful glare.

'Slowpoke,' she laughs. 'Come eat with me if you want, Oliver is on his way over.' A slight breeze brings the smells of pine trees, and sagebrush, mixed with the scent of some good smelling flowers upwind.

This is Emma, she's one of my closest friends. Her mate is Oliver; they found each other pretty quickly during Wolf Shifter school, which is basically a summer camp where we all learn our history and the history of the global Supernatural community called the Wolven Empire.

Emma's Wolf form is very pretty. Her brown fur is always very shiny and compliments her bright brown eyes, though, for some reason the fur on her head is a little longer than the rest. She's shorter than me in both forms. While in Human form Emma's hair reaches down to her shoulders with short bangs, pretty brown eyes, a curvy body, and a contagiously happy smile.

'Hey, Emm! Hey Russ!' Oliver says walking over. Olivers Wolf from is a little taller than Emma's and a little shorter than mine. His fur is dark grey and his eyes, a bright glowing green-hazel color. In Olivers Human form, he's taller than both of us, and he is a bit beefier than I am. His hair is short, curly, and black which compliments his face and powerful smile.

Emma is going to be my Beta and we're both excited about it. I know it seems weird because she's a female but there are three deciding factors: One is they have to be born with the status of a Beta. Second, it depends on who the Alpha decides they want their Beta to be, I choose her. And third, she's the only child of the current Beta.

Sex has nothing to do with it just like there are female Alphas.

'Hey, how's it going? I heard you're going to do combat training soon? I think its pretty fun, I can spar with you anytime you want,' I offer Oliver as I look around at the beautiful landscape around us.

'It's going well, and yes I'm doing some training to join our main fighting force,' Oliver replies back to me.

I nod. 'Nice, which-' I am interrupted by a loud howl, then the sound of paws moving fast towards us. 'A formation, Emm on right, Oli on left,' I command as I get ready to attack. Emm and Oli do as I say, then we are ready for whatever is coming. I bark demandingly at the intruder to halt but they kept coming.

'Russ, it's my dad,' Emma says to me. I relax a little and watch in the direction of the sounds. Realizing I've blocked everyone out except Emma and Oliver, I open the link up to her dad.

'Russell, Clarissa's child is about to have her pack initiation ceremony and your father would like you to handle it please,' John tells me as he gets closer. As the breeze changes, I begin to smell him as he gets to us.
