Chapter Forty Nine; So You're My Girlfriend?

Ginnie Matthews

I don't exactly know what it is, but something about Ms. Bates just kinda gives me the creeps. Did you know that nobody at Roosevelt High has ever seen her smile? Ever.

I liked my seat next to Jessica, though, so that's good. "Alright, class!" Ms. Bates called, "I hate to.... how would you guys say it.... harsh your mellow or whatever but I have a class to begin and students to inspire," she continued, then rolled her eyes.

At least she's trying to make an effort? Everyone started laughing. She cleared her throat, and then stated "Today I'll be switching your seats around."

No! Personally, I like sitting with Jessica. Well, I hope I'm just not moved next to somebody totally weird like Monique. That would suck.

I mean, I don't normally judge people, but she's REALLY WEIRD. Like, she always brags about how she can make herself throw up.. And once she got suspended for bringing a hammer to school. "Tyler, Ginnie, go sit together where Morgan and Aubrey were sitting."

Oh, God. Why? Slowly, quietly, I shuffled over to my new seat. Tyler's words echoed in my mind from just a few minutes ago:

"So you're my girlfriend?" He smiled cheekily at me.

"I guess I am," I mirrored his smile.

I felt our knees brush under the table, and then I softly nudged his foot. He nudged back.

Suddenly, my face reddened at the realization that everyone, including Ms. Bates, were staring at us. I crossed my arms over my chest and tried to make myself seem as small and uninteresting as possible.

I didn't listen to anything Ms. Bates said in class today, because every time I felt Tyler brush against me, or I saw him shake his hair out of his face, or crinkle his eyebrows in confusion at what Ms. Bates was saying, any bubble of concentration I had in my disappeared and I was completely distracted by him.

Everything he did made me wanna squeal. Suddenly, Ms. Bates snapped me out of my thoughts. "Everybody turn and talk about what you think to your partner!" She called.

Turn and talk about what? I hadn't been paying attention! Ugh.

I turned to face Tyler. "Ladies first," he motioned for me to speak.

"Oh, no it's okay. You can talk first," the words come out harsher than I intended.

"No, no Ginnie, I insist," he smirked.

"Alright, well I have no idea what we're supposed to be talking about," I admitted.

"Really? And why is that?" The look on his face told me that he knew exactly why.

"I was distracted."

"And what might the cause of that been?" He continued his integration.

A blush crept up my neck and I could feel as it made it's way to my cheeks. "You."

"Alright, school's over!" Ms. Bates boomed.

Quickly, I collected my notes and made a dash for the door, but I could feel him following me every step of the way. "Mind if I walk you home?" He came up behind me.

"Wow, what a gentleman," I giggled.

"So is that a yes?"

"It's a maybe," I did my best at what I hoped would look like a mischievous smile.

He chuckled. "C'mon, Gin, let's go."

He pulled me out of the school and onto the street, where he took my smaller hand in his and started walking with me in the direction of my house. Things were quiet for a little, until I heard him start whistling. I hesitated momentarily, before joining in. He gave my hands a squeeze. I squeezed back.

"Ginnie?" He asked.

"What?" I countered.

"You're cute."

I blushed. This boy was just too perfect. He always knew the weirdest, cutest, most flattering, funniest things to say. I looked up and saw that he had started skipping. I laughed out loud. This boy was all too full of surprises. I squealed as he lightly tugged on my arm and I started skipping with him. I couldn't help myself from laughing harder an harder as he kept skipping along with me. This was absolutely perfect. He started laughing along with me and skipping faster. Between the facts that I was laughing so hard and trying so hard to keep up with him, plus the fact that he always makes me breathless to begin with by just being near me, breathing became kinda hard. "Tyler?" I gasped between laughs.

"Yeah Gin?"

I slowly surveyed the area. "We passed my house."

"Oh."
