I wiped the sweat from my brow as I put the box in it's perspective place. I looked around the place at all my things scattered about. The movers simply brought my things inside while I decided to put everything up. Maybe I should've gotten them to help out some. I sighed. This is going to take a while.
Unpacking was my only concern since all of my furniture was already here and in place. I had been in preparation for this move for about a month. I lived in a condo before this and now I'm in a three bedroom house. It's a bit bigger than what I'm used to but a lot cheaper than what I was previously paying for so I guess I can live with the extra space. Although, I have no idea what to do with it. I guess I'll figure it out on the way or just ask for some advice. Interior decoration isn't my strong suit so I'll ask my mom about it.
My phone started ringing in my pocket. I looked at the number and chuckled. Of course the moment I thought of her she decided to call me. "Hey mom," I answered.
"Hey son, you all moved in?"
"So so. All the furniture is here at least. It's now a matter of putting everything up in it's place. I may actually need more stuff than I have now. Whenever I decide to fly you down here you can help with that."
"Thanks for asking," she said sarcastically making me laugh. "Have I ever told you how proud of you I am?"
I let out another laugh. "Almost every single time we talk so maybe four or five times a day."
"Oh hush you," she chuckled. "I just really am that's all. You're only twenty-five and already a branch manager of a big shot company. I'm just so glad that even though we had many problems in the past the one thing I never had to worry about was your education. I knew you were going to do great things but I never thought it would've happened so soon. You truly are blessed and highly favored my child."
"Thanks mom."
"Don't forget us once you start making all that money," she joked.
"How could I forget someone who's going to be right there with me? As soon as I get my finances back in order I'm buying you a house down here. Or you can just move in with me until then."
"Boy you are grown. What the hell do I look like cramping your style? You need to focus on that job and finding me someone to give me some grandbabies."
"Mom you know I'm not worried about that," I waved off.
"Yeah I do. But I'm worried about it. You ain't getting any younger and neither am I. Give me some grandbabies Jayden. With a nice wholesome girl who's your wife first of course."
"My job demands a lot of my attention. I doubt any woman would be willing to make that kind of sacrifice."
"The right one would." There was noise happening in the background. "Okay son looks like I have to go. I just called to check on you and say love you okay? Proud of you baby."
"Love you too and thanks mom." I chuckled a bit as I hung up. She's been really pushy with the grandchildren subject lately. I don't blame her though.
My mom had always had dreams of a big family. She got pregnant with my older brother young and ended up severely altering her future plans of being a successful doctor. I came along four years later. My brother died when I was two in a car crash with my dad and it's been me and my mom all my life. Seeing her struggle the way she did really pushed me to become something great. I kept my head in the books and stayed out of trouble. I ended up skipping two grades and graduated at sixteen. I was able to get scholarships and spent most of my college years saving money for grad school. Got my degree in finance and was immediately offered an internship at a shipping company. Worked there for a few years until I got the opportunity to work somewhere better. My current employer now. I never indulged myself in finding someone although it wouldn't be too hard.
I guess now that I've gotten to a secure place in life my mom is more determined than ever to get me to settle down. It's not a terrible idea but my job demands a lot of time and I'm not too sure many women are willing to cope with that. If anything I wouldn't mind just having my mom around. She's the number one woman in my life after all. I wouldn't be who I am without her.
There was a knock on the door that got my attention. I went to it and saw an older woman holding a plate of cookies. She smiled at me. "Hello!"
"Hello ma'am. How can I help you?"
"My name's Betty and I live right across from you. I've noticed a lot of hustle and bustle going about the pass few weeks but I never got a chance to meet up with you. Now that you have finally moved in I took it upon myself to welcome you to the neighborhood. Here's some cookies suga'." She handed the plate over. I'm from New York so this type of thing was new to me and I had no idea what to say. "No need to thank me. Just doing the neighborly thing."
"Oh uh...thanks ma'am."
"I just said you didn't have to thank me suga'," she laughed. "So where you moving from?"
"New York. Got a new job down here."
"Oh? Far way to go for a job. Think you gonna like it."
"Yeah I suppose."
"Have you met anyone else in the neighborhood?"
"No not yet. I'm busy unpa-"
"Really? Well look here," she grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the house. "You see that house there?" she pointed to one of the houses on the street. "That's the Jefferson's. They like to act like a perfect little family but we all know better. Whenever Mr. Jefferson leaves she invites over some young dude and does heaven knows what while their twin boys always sneak out after twelve and never returns until early the next morning. I think they're doing illegal things." She rambled on more and more on the neighborly gossip while holding me captive. I had no idea how to escape this woman. "The young woman who lives next door to you may be around your age. Don't know much about her. She's not really home too much. And when she is she's locked herself up tight inside the house."
"Ma'am I have a lot of unpacking to do," I said.
"Oh chile you're right! I'm just holdin you up. I'm sorry suga'. Once I get started it's hard to stop. You seem like a nice young man. If you're ever in the mood for some good ole southern cooking you're more than welcome to my house for Sunday dinner."
"Thanks ma'am. I'll uh...let you know."
"Okay suga'. Go ahead and unpack. See you at dinner okay?" She waved before going across the street making sigh in relief. I've never met a more intense old woman in my life. Maybe she's the reason my neighbor doesn't come out much.
I know this chapter is short and sucky. Sorry. The first couple chapters are purely to introduce the characters a bit. And sorry for the long wait! I had no idea how to write this chapter so I did a complete outline of the story to give me a guideline. It's not complete yet but I do have a majority of the story figured out so updates should be a bit more frequently. Hope you all enjoy.
