I opened my eyes as milky light poured into the nursery. I stretched and looked down at my ginger and yellow paws. I looked at my mother, and then my litter mates, all still sleeping. I didn't want to wake them, but I really wanted to go explore camp. So, I carefully stood up, shook out my fluffy pelt, and strolled out of the nursery.
The camp was almost completely empty, other than a patrol of warriors coming down the hill into camp. I recognized my father, Shadefur, walking at the front of the group. I bounded over to him. I accidentally bumped into him, but I saw his eyes soften when he realized it was me.
"What are you doing up so early?" He purred.
"I'm exploring camp! All by my self!" I mewed boastfully.
I saw his eyes gleam with amusement. He rubbed my cheek, and continued to lead the patrol towards Timberstar's den. I followed, trying not to get caught. Then, I heard my father talking inside the den.
"All is good around the border, the other Clans don't seem to have any business in our territory. We also found an abandoned badger set. It hasn't been there for moons." I heard him report.
I heard the bold mew of Timberstar through the brambles.
"Good." He exclaimed.
Suddenly, Reedfur turned around and caught me eavesdropping.
"What are you doing kit?" He growled.
My fur fluffed up with fear. Reedfur had been in line to be deputy, but he fell ill with green cough, and everyone thought that he would die. So my father became deputy. And once Reedfur got better, he never got over it. Therefore he is easily angered.
"I... I was exploring camp." I said, trying to sound proud.
I flattened my fur and puffed out my chest.
"All by my self!" I added, trying not to seem afraid.
He snorted and I think I heard him mumble "Kits." Under his breath. Then he told me to go back to the nursery. I rolled my eyes, but listened. I padded to the nursery with my tiny tail high.
"One day, I will become leader. Then I can boss Reedfur around all day." I hissed to myself.
When I walked into the nursery, my litter mates were waking up.
"Morning Smokekit, Morning Cloudkit!" I mewed.
"Morning!" They both said in unison.
"Hey Flamekit, Wanna go chase Shadefur's tail?" Cloudkit asked, looking ready to pounce.
"Yeah! And lets bug The Elders and make them tell us stories!" Smokekit exclaimed.
I nodded, but as we walked out of the nursery, the camp started getting really busy. I noticed Reedfur glaring at me.
"What's ruffling his fur?" Cloudkit asked.
I didn't want to talk about him catching me eavesdropping, so I just shrugged. When we got to my father, he was picking a starling out of the fresh kill pile. His tail was perfect for chasing, slowly flicking back and forth. I stepped back to let Smokekit go first. He pounced and landed on Shadfur's tail. Shadefur rolled over and started batting playfully at my brother. Then Cloudkit pounced. And just like that, we all started play fighting, the starling long forgotten. Life couldn't be better.
