"Flamepelt, run. I smell fox." Waspclaw whispered.
But I didn't listen. I wouldn't leave him here to fight this fox alone. Suddenly, the snarling beast stepped out. It looked filthy, covered in mange and ticks. One eye was pale will blindness. And it's once fluffy tail now looked more like a rat tail. Even with it's deformities, it was still the biggest fox that I had ever seen.
It focused it's good eye on me, and growled. Then, it lunged, but I was ready. I dodged and ran my claws along it's flank as it went by. It let out a welp and tumbled, trying not to get sucked up by the current of water that raced past. It had recently rained, and the river was higher and stronger. Anything that fell in, would certainly be swept away. It stopped just short of the cold water. And stood upright.
"Waspclaw! Lookout!" I cried as it lunged at him.
But he was too busy worrying about me. It toppled him over and pinned him down. It's foaming teeth inches from his neck.
"No!" I screamed, throwing myself at the beast.
I toppled it over, and pinned it to the ground.
It turned it's good eye on me, and that's when I noticed. This fox was pregnant. In her good eye, I only saw hunger. She was pregnant and hungry.
"Please! Let him go! We will let you go if you do. I know that you are expecting cubs, and you just want food. We will let you go, if you leave our territory." I meowed.
I stepped off her and she eyed me closely, she understood. She took her claws off of Waspclaw, and I eyed him so he wouldn't attack her, but he was just staring at me in astonishment. Then she turned tail, and fled towards rouge territory.
"How did you do that?" Waspclaw panted.
I looked at him curiously.
    "Do what?" I asked.
He had pure terror on his face.
"Y...you spoke in fox tongue. The fox understood you, but I did not." He quivered.
"What? I thought that I was speaking in cat tongue. How could I have spoken fox tongue, if I don't even know how too?" I meowed.
He shook his head.
"I don't know how you did it. But you did it." He replied, he had stopped shaking.
This was so weird. I didn't even try to speak fox, I was speaking cat. I spoke just like I normally do.
Was this the doing of StarClan?
I looked into the rushing river, amazed by its speed and strength. I shivered when a cold breeze swept across the water. I leaned against Waspclaw's warm pelt and breathed in his scent. He smelled of pine, like he had rolled around in a pile of pinecones.
"Flamepelt, you were saying something before the fox attacked. What was it?" Waspclaw asked suddenly.
My cheeks felt flushed. Was I really ready to say this? I took a deep breath, and started.
"Waspclaw, I just want you to know.... what I'm trying to say is.... I love you." I meowed.
He didn't respond right away, and that left me feeling insecure. Then, he looked into my eyes, his deep green eyes soft and warm.
"Flamepelt, I love you too." He purred at last.
