The helicopter landed in the water and Adam grabbed me. The water was surprisingly warm. It was twenty feet deep. Everyone else was at the top and swimming to shore except us. Then, to my horror, Adam and I got sucked down by the current. Adam pushed me up but I still couldn't feel my arms and legs. Miraculously,I got the feeling back in them and swam up. My mind was only focused on one thing: Get to the surface. My leg was in pain but I didn't care. I reached the surface and spit out water. Then I heard mom yelling my name and I swam to the shore. When I reached it they dragged me out and wrapped a piece of cloth around my leg. How they had the cloth I didn't know. I looked at everyone. Then I realized Adam was missing. I spun around and stared at the rushing water. He probably was twenty miles down stream already.
"ADAM!" I shouted as I walked away from the group.
I kept shouting his name for an hour until mom came and got me. She led me back to the group and looked me in the eye.
"Adam's gone Sawyer," she told me.
"NO! HE CAN'T BE GONE!" I screamed
Then I tried to jump back in the water and search for him. But two paramedics held me back. I started screaming and kicking and trying to get out of their grasp. Hot tears poured down my face as they dragged me away from the river. No. Adam can't be dead. We got away from the river and we were near a road. Then they let me go and I sank to my knees and started bawling. Along with me beating up Adam yesterday, he was lost and drowning in a river. It was my fault. All my fault. Mom came over and placed her hand on my shoulder. I looked up and pulled myself together. She reached in her pocket and brought out a box. The box dad gave her when he left.
"He gave this to me to give to you for your fifteenth birthday," mom said.
I took it and opened the box. Inside it was a necklace with a tree pendant. I smiled and put it on. Then I heard sirens. I stood up and an ambulance came towards us. I looked at my leg. I needed to go to the hospital to get stitches in my leg. The paramedics came and put me on a stretcher. We got in the ambulance and this time when they pricked my neck I blacked out.

My eyes opened and I saw lights. At first I thought I was dreaming but then I saw a bed and a heart monitor thing. A sigh of relief escaped my mouth. I was in a greenish-blue hospital dress and I had stitches on my left leg. I wondered when I could go home and look for Adam. Dread settled over me. Adam. He was still lost in the river. I was about to cry again when mom came in. She half smiled half frowned at me as she walked over.
"They couldn't find Adam. It's been three hours and if they don't find him by tomorrow their announcing him dead. I'm sorry," she said.
Anger filled me. I know he's alive! He has to be alive! My brown furrowed and I clenched my fists. Then a nurse came in and exclaimed that I'm stable and able to leave. I nodded my head and she unhooked me. Then I got changed into jeans, a tee shirt, and my Ontisuka Tigers. Mom and I walked down the hallway and out the front door. As we walked across the parking lot, my phone buzzed and I got a text. I brought it out and looked at it. It was a strange text.
From:BlockedNumber To:Sawyer
I know where Adam is. Come to the river tomorrow. Hope you like scavenger hunts.
I forced myself to swallow. How does this person know my number and know where Adam is? I told mom and her brow furrowed in concern. She said I could go as long as I'm prepared. I nodded my head. We reached the car and started driving home.
We reached home and it was dark out. I saw a bunch of fireflies and sang 'Fireflies.' I got out of the car and we went inside. Mom went to the kitchen and made us dinner, which was pizza. After dinner, I headed to my room and started making a list of what I need. When that was finished, I realized I was filthy. Sighing, I went to the bathroom, took a quick shower, and got into my pajamas. My feet led me to my room and I collapsed onto my bed. I was exhausted. My eyes closed and I fell asleep into a nightmare.

"Sawyer," a man said in a singsong voice, "I need you. Where are you?"
I was back in the room. But there was light this time. It was dirty and it looked like a bedroom. An old bedroom. I saw a man who had grey hair and wore jeans, an old torn tee shirt and no shoes. He smiled evilly at me. Shivers ran down the back of my spine. He came close and grabbed my face.
"Sawyer, I know about Adam. I know about you. And I know about your father," he whispered in my ear.
Then he disappeared and I started screaming.

"SAWYER!" Mom shouted
My eyes flew opened and I saw mom. My breathing was heavy and I was coated in sweat. Mom explained that I was yelling and I was also yelling for dad and Adam. My face got hot. She looked at me with an expression that said: tell me what you dreamt about. I looked at my hands and then back at her. I took a deep breath and told her everything.
