I sat there staring at Dad. Or Adam. I'm still not sure if I should call him 'Adam' or 'Dad.' Blood gushed from his head. Anger swelled up inside me. He. Can't. Die! I glared at Austin as I stood up. I wanted to punch him in the face multiple times. He sneered at me and ended up shooting Adam in his shoulder. He's not going to die, I told myself. Then I yelled and grabbed a stick. I whacked Austin on the head. He fell backwards. I looked at Adam and at Austin. Great, both guys are knocked out. I checked my pockets for my phone. Couldn't find it. I checked Austin for a phone. Couldn't find anything. Lastly, I checked Adam and he had a phone. I used it and called mom then nine-one-one. Mom came in twenty minuets and gasped. She rushed by Dad's side and started wrapping a piece of cloth on his head. Then I heard sirens followed by a stretcher and two paramedics coming in. I stood up and explained what happened as they loaded dad onto a stretcher and took Austin away. Mom and I went up and we rode in the ambulance with them while they checked me over. I was fine just bruised badly on my chest and various places. I looked at Dad. I took hold of his hand and said a silent prayer. Then the heart monitor started beeping rapidly. Paramedics started CPR. I made eye contact with mom. Her face showed fear.

We reached the hospital in two hours and dad was worse. Mom and I sat in the waiting room while dad was in emergency surgery for something. Mom wrapped her arms around me. My mind was swimming with questions like, why didn't she tell me sooner? Or why did this all happen? And a bunch of others. I looked her in the eye.

"Why were you lying to me this whole time, Mom? W-why didn't you tell me that Adam Young is my dad? Why didn't you tell me that my name isn't Sawyer Austin Woods? Why mom?" I ask in a whisper with my voice breaking as tears rolled down my face

Her lip quivered. "I don't know, sweetie. We.....we were scared and young at the time. Please forgive me."

I nodded my head instead of responding. Another hour passed and we heard nothing about Dad. Just when we were about to leave, a doctor rushed in and asked to speak with us right away. We went in the hallway and he explained that the surgery went well and Adam is in critical condition and he might not make it past recovery. Tears stung my eyes. I ended up walking away and out to the car. A few minuets later mom joined me. She started the car and began to drive home. While we were on the road, an awkward silence fell between us.

"Wanna talk about it?" Mom suddenly asked

I sighed heavily and looked out the window. "No thanks. Maybe when...." My voice trailed off as I began to cry again.

Mom held her free hand out and I held it. She squeezed my hand. Then she let go and focused on the road. I started singing 'This is the Future.' About halfway through I fell asleep while we were still driving.
