Chapter XXIII-So take a breath of myth and mystery

I ran down a road full speed. Austin was chasing me. My breathing was heavy and my heart pounded in my chest. I tripped and fell. Then Austin came over and yanked me to my feet. I made eye contact with him. He leaned in close to my ear.

"So take a breath of myth and mystery and don't look back." Austin whispered

He pulled away and smirked at me. Then he disappeared.

I woke up screaming. I was covered in sweat. Yuck. What did Austin mean? The only thing I recognized that saying from was from dad's song. I shook my head and sat up. My arm was hurting where that thing cut me yesterday. I threw the covers off of me,stood up, and made my way to my closet and picked out jean shorts, a purple tee shirt, and flip-flops. After I had those on I went out. The smell of bacon filled my nose and made my mouth water.

I sprinted down the hallway, through the den and into the kitchen. I saw Mom, Breanne,Jasper, and Gabriel. They all looked at me with shocked expressions. I took a step forward and my legs gave out. I screamed and fell. What's going on? Jasper came over and helped me up. I looked at everyone with fear.

"Mom what's going on?" I asked in a soft voice

"I...I'm not sure."

Great, I thought. Jasper led me to a chair and I sat down. I looked at my arm. The bandage was bloody. I removed it and examined it. I was about to touch it when Mom rushed over and stopped me. She told Breanne to go get a new bandage. Breanne got up and left. Mom and I made eye contact. I asked her again what's going on and she broke eye contact. So she does know what's going on! I wasn't going to ask her any more questions because she looked uncomfortable. Breanne returned and mom put the bandage on my arm. Then she went to finish cooking the bacon. I looked back at Jasper, Gabriel and Breanne. They didn't make eye contact with me. They were wearing different clothes than when I saw them last.

"Can we visit dad at the same time we did yesterday?" I questioned

Everyone sucked in a breath in unison. Shivers ran down my spine. Mom walked over and placed her hand on my shoulder. We made eye contact.

"We're not allowed to visit him anymore, Michelle."

I couldn't speak. My mouth felt dry and there was a lump in my throat.

"W-why?" I asked as tears formed in my eyes.

Mom didn't answer and went back to the stove and placed the bacon on a plate. She walked over to the table and placed it down. Everyone was at the table eating. I stood off to the side. Breanne looked over and saw me. She motioned for me to come. I shook my head and walked back to my room. My phone buzzed in my pocket when I reached my bedroom. I looked at my phone. It was a text from Austin. It said that he was waiting for me. Then he gave an address to some place in Iowa. He also said that I need to leave soon. I replied. I stuck my head out the door and peered down the hallway. No one was coming. My heart pounded in my chest as I closed the door and I went to my closet. I brought out a black backpack and began throwing clothes and batteries and a flashlight and other things I need. I changed into black pants, a black tee shirt, and tennis shoes. Along with my heart pounding in my chest, my stomach was doing three-sixties. I wrote a note then shouldered my backpack and snuck out the window. I sprinted across the yard and reached the end of the driveway when I heard Mom yell my name. I didn't look back and kept running. I couldn't believe it.

I'm really running away.
