18 - Zoos?

The three of us walked home, or were carried home in Douglas's case, given he refused to let go of me, and went and sat in the living room. Doug got all his stuffed animals out and pulled me down onto the carpet with him. "You can have the elephant and the giraffe. And I'll do the rest." He handed me the two animals as he lined the other 5 up beside him. We began to play and I got really into it, like I often did when playing with Doug. He had such a sweet, young, creative mind and to him anything could happen in a zoo.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Chris with his phone out. I knew he was taking a photo of us from the way he looked at the screen and at us. He finally put his phone down and I heard mine go off. He had tweeted the picture of Doug and I.

'Watching @_mandygonzalez playing with my son is one of the most amazing things to witness. These two have such a special bond it's beautiful. Love you both.'

I liked and retweeted the tweet before smiling at my boyfriend and turning back to play with Doug. "Chris?"

"Yes Mandy."

"You look a little bored up there. And some of these animals are feeling a little left out."

"Are you asking me to come play with you?"

"Yeah." I smiled and fluttered my eyelashes at him, hoping he would join us and we could spend time as a real family.

"I could never say no to you Mandy." He stood up from the couch and joined us. After a few minutes I grabbed my phone and took a picture of Chris and Doug having a conversation with the zebra and lion.

I went back to Chris's tweet and added a comment.

'Look who finally decided to join in! Love these boys so much. Current situation, Chris the Zebra thinking he's better than Doug the Lion! I vote lion!'

Chris saw the notification and smiled at me. "Why do you vote lion?"

"Because everyone knows the lion is the king of the zoo. It's how it's always been, and a zebra ain't going to change that. So you can stop trying babe." Chris put his animals to sleep and went to make dinner for us.

"Doug, Mandy dinner is ready my loves."

"I don't want dinner, I want to keep playing." Doug said going into a sulk.

"Hey Dougy. Don't be upset." I pulled him into a hug and rubbed his back. "We have all weekend together so we can play then. Okay?"

"Okay then. That's a promise right?" He looked up at me as I hugged him.

"Of course that's a promise Dougy. I love you so much, you are the best kid in the world and I'm so lucky to have you." I kissed his forehead before standing.

"I love you too Mandy. Your the best step-mom in the world." I smiled a little smile at him before taking his hand and walking him to wash his hands and sit at the table. Once Doug was in his chair I pulled Chris to one side.

"Babe." I said with a small tear in my eye.

"Yes gorgeous? What's up." He brushed the hair out of my face, tucking it behind my ears.

"I don't know what to do. Doug just told me I was the best step-mom in the world. I'm not technically his step-mom and I don't know where he learnt that but I don't want him to call me that unless you're happy with it."

"Babe. It's okay. I'm happy with that. You are kind of his step mom now. You're my girlfriend Mandy and I love you so much. We will be okay. Doug loves you so much and you are such a good mom figure to him. Okay."

"Okay, I love you Chris." I go up onto my tiptoes and lightly kiss him.
