"Hey, Darlings!" he greeted us with his signature smirk, which I thought was a little bit off. "What are you doing here?"
"Duncan?" I called him, more with a questioning tone. "What are you doing here?"
He gave me his megawatt smile while making his way closer and closer to us. "Well, I really like walking alone at night." He shrugged his shoulder. His blazing blue eyes were salient among the faint silhouette of the trees. "I get to see some interesting things. Especially in a full moon." He stopped in front of me. His breathing came out as rapid air, going in and out from his mouth. "You haven't answered my question. Well, Gorgeous," he emphasized while nailing his eyes on mine. "What are the five wonderful women of Magical Home doing here?"
I immediately gulped down the saliva that blocked my throat as he was standing there without even blinking for a second. "I- I-," I stuttered, mentally going through some stack of papers to search for a reasonable answer beside shifting to a different form of living things. W- We just... amaze to see a full moon so big tonight. That's why we're here." Jumble of words came out of my mouth in a rush as I stared down to see the grass under my feet.
"Oh," he mumbled softly in response. I was still busy counting the grass when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked to my left to see Lou giving me a small smile. She clamped one of her crutches under her armpit to steady her stance.
"Let's go home," she said softly. She gave a quick, yet shy glance at Duncan while pulling her cheekbones to form a quick smile at him. "Duncan," she greeted him so weakly that I was sure if I were nowhere near her, I would not be able to notice the first time she ever called his name.
I peeked to see his reaction after my friend finally called his name to acknowledge his presence. But, it was something unpredictable. His demeanour suddenly changed in an instant, from slightly slouching in a relaxed manner to stiff as a cardboard. The smirk that was carved on his face was faltered like an ice thwarted in the middle of a dessert. His eyes were so intense that I thought they were penetrating to Lou's deep soul. "Louise," Duncan greeted her back with his deep, rich voice that immediately made Lou's hand grip my shoulder.
I winced while jumping slightly due to the sudden movement, tearing my observation from Duncan's expression to my friend who was now mouth agape while looking down at the grass. I saw her cheeks reddened like a ripe tomato, but her expression showed that she was going to faint any minute now.
Mental note: ask what's going on.
"I really have a bad feeling about him," Selena suddenly said, successfully making me divert my attention to her. I looked down at the grass which danced beautifully with the wind.
Duncan?
"Yeah." She sighed. I immediately furrowed my eyebrows as my mind was recalling every meeting I had with him. Since the beginning of our meeting, he was proven as a friendly person, yet sometimes I could notice he was staring intensely that made me shiver. It was his eyes that I thought were trying to penetrate through my soul, searching for something hidden there.
