L Versus Levi

"LEVI DID WHAT?!" A shrill female voice yelled, too close to my ear to be considered comfortable.

The car journey back to the hotel had been relatively quiet, Watari sending small frowns my way when I'd try to justify my actions, despite knowing very well that I'd made a big mistake. My self-preservation instincts surprised me, as usually I'd be relaxed over this kind of thing. Maybe it was the thought of my actions negatively affecting people other than me which bugged me, but I was more restless than usual.

I'd been sitting cross-legged, as per usual, being lectured by Watari over how I needed to think more about my decisions when Klara had arrived. She hadn't been told any details on what had happened, but Watari texted her saying something along the lines of 'L fucked up, come over'.

When the brunette arrived, out of breath as if she'd sprinted all the way here, she pounded on the door with her fist. Klara looked terrified as I opened the door, pulling me into a hug. I'd guessed she interpreted Watari's text as something having happened to me based on the relief that flooded her features. Her face stayed buried in my chest for a few minutes while she calmed herself down, Watari interrupting to explain the situation.

"He had sex with Eren Smith, his main suspect for the Kira case." Watari replied. "Twice." They were giving me a look of disapproval as they spoke.

The brunette crossed her arms, narrowing her gaze. "Levi Ackerman, are you an idiot?"

"No," I growled, "I just made a mistake. I'm human, aren't I?"

"Normal mistakes don't put peoples lives in jeopardy."

"Car crashes, leaving stoves on, forgetting to put away a toy by a staircase. There are hundreds of mistakes which put people's lives on the line."

"BUT YOU COULD'VE AVOIDED THIS SO EASILY!" Klara shouted, obviously more agitated than usual. "And since when were you gay, or bisexual, or just interested in men in general?"

"I could've avoided this?" I asked, my voice wavering. "ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT, BECAUSE I'M PRETTY SURE I COULDN'T THINK STRAIGHT AS SOON AS THAT KID SUGGESTED FUCKING!" I ran a hand through my hair in frustration, trying to stop myself from raising my voice. Klara had done nothing wrong, I had no right to get angry at her. "And I don't know, I've never really needed to think about my sexuality."

"Well maybe it's time to start doing so, because if you make another mistake someone will have to pay for it. If that person ended up being you, I'd rather sacrifice myself instead."

My eyes widened in shock. "Klara Dubois, if I make a mistake it is my job to fix it. Don't you dare try and sacrifice yourself." I sighed, "You've got your whole life ahead of you, and at the end of the day you can blend in with society as easy as the click of a finger. I refuse to let you help me on this case if you don't know when to save your own skin and when to leave me to rot. I will not have you sacrificing yourself for me."

"Levi, it's supposed to be my choice about who I give me life for and who I don't."

"If the time comes, I won't hesitate to sentence Kira, and any of his accomplices, to death. If Eren Smith is revealed to be Kira, I will put aside anything that may make me unsure of what to do. I will not spare him." I announced, believing my words.

I'll admit that I took pleasure from the idea of 'L' being different to 'Levi', but I had to draw a line somewhere. I'd known Eren Smith for weeks, a few months at best; I'd known Klara for over fifteen years. If I had to pick one person to save, I knew who it'd be.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't value Eren's presence in my life. He understood me in a way others didn't, or maybe I should say that he understood me in a way others couldn't. He unintentionally helped me find who 'Levi' was, and who Levi wasn't. To an extent, I believed I was broken pieces of Rivaille Ackerman, the boy who died in a tragic house fire with his parents. You could go as far as saying that all of the aspects I believed made who I was went up in flames with my house. I'd been living as 'L' after that.
