"Are we gonna look for mommy and daddy?" Ozzie asked. We've been walking for a while.
"We can't Oz", I whispered"we have to get some food first, now be quiet". We haven't spotted any zombies yet but we're prepared. I held a knife and Ozzie had her spear(which was too big for her).
We finally arrived at the market. The parking lot was crawling with zombies feeding off of bodies or roaming around. Blood was splattered everywhere and on the hoods of cars.
The market was untouched. It looked closed and empty.
Ozzie and I hid behind a car that was in the back of the parking lot. How were we gonna get across the parking lot without being eaten. I buried my face in my hands and brainstormed for a plan. I knew Ozzie's big eyes were burning into me hoping I had a plan.
I didn't have a plan. I had to make a dreadful sacrifice.
I pulled out my phone. The battery was almost dead so it wouldn't be much of a use to me later. I set the Alarm Clock app to 15 seconds.
"Prepare to run". I told Ozzie. I hit the start button and threw the phone far away in front of us. I squeezed Ozzie's tiny hand hoping my plan would worked.
Fifteen seconds passed. The phone started it's alarm and vibrated making allot of noise.
Heavy footsteps and snarls came our way. A zombie hopped over our car and ran toward my phone. Ozzie held me tightly. A bunch of other zombies jumped over the car or ran around it running towards my phone. They didn't even noticed us.
They crowded around the phone. The alarm was only going to last for 5 minutes so we had to move. I grabbed Ozzie's hand and jumped over the car and we ran towards the market. Only a few zombies were in the parking lot but they didn't notice us yet.
Ozzie and I finally made it to the doors. We pushed and pulled but they didn't open. They weren't locked, something was holding them together.
I heard Ozzie scream. A zombie zeroed in on her. I acted fast and stabbed it in the stomach and pushed it backwards. It fell to the ground and I quickly stomped on its head.
Other zombies noticed us and were on their way. Ozzie and I ran for our lives to the back of the market only to find dozens of zombies there.
We were trapped! How could it end this quickly!?! I looked all around for a way out.
The garden area was on our right. I grabbed Ozzie and rushed inside closing the tall metal gate behind us. The zombies crowded around the gate gnawing on the gate or putting their arms through the holes.
They realized they couldn't get in so they began climbing up the gate. My jaw dropped, they climb too! Soon, they'd be over the fence and we'd be trapped.
I thought fast. I ran to the side of the garden and grabbed a portable generator and rushed back to the scene. Ozzie was frozen in terror watching the zombies climb over the gate. I made her hide behind a large flower pot and returned to my plan.
The zombies were almost over the gate. I hooked the generator up to the gate and turned it on. Electricity bolted into the gates frying every zombie that was touching it.
They jittered and their necks started releasing smoke letting ouy a horrible smell. Their dead bodies fell to the ground with a heavy thud.
One zombie did get over the gate. He was too fast to for the electricity to fry him. He stood on top of the gate ready to pounce. Before I could run, he pounced on me.
The weight of his body pushed me onto the floor with him on top. I put my hands on his face and trying to push him off me. He snarled and tried to bite me. The strength of his head was too strong for my arms and his teeth were getting closer and closer to my neck.
A wooden point sprouted of the zombie's forehead pouring blood all over my face. Then the wood went back into its forehead. The zombie dropped dead. I quickly pushed the zombie off of me and wiped the blood off my face.
Ozzie stood in front of me staring at the body gripping the bloody spear really hard. Tears rolled down her face and she began to whimper.
I quickly rushed over and hugged her. A little girl like her shouldn't have to live like this. I can't image what she's feeling or thinking right now. She can't even kill a roach in the kitchen without breaking down, being around all this death at this age will change her.
Ozzie's whimpering turned into crying. I picked her up and carried her away. We entered through the slide in door. Ozzie cried into my shoulder trying to keep quiet.
The market was dark and quiet. It made me wonder if zombies were in here. We needed to get to the canned food area.
We quietly made our way down the isle. I saw a light over at the meat area. I also heard chattering, human chattering. In excitement, I rushed over to the noise.
A large group of people stood at the meat section talking and debating something. They argued loudly as if bloodthirsty zombies weren't outside. Apparently everyone else had the same idea as me and was stuck here now.
I put Ozzie back on the ground and we snuck up behind the group. They didn't notice us. I looked around the large group and spotted Dennis and his mother. I rushed over to them with Ozzie tagging along behind.
"Dennis!" I called. He and his mother looked happy to see me.
"Leola, hey", He greeted"who's that?"
"That's my sister Ozzie, say hi". Ozzie didn't say anything, she just stared at Dennis.
"What's going on?" I said clearing the tension.
"I dunno it was like this when we got here". He said. "We came here looking for food, other were here when this started". "I don't care cuz there's a bunch of zombie comics here so I'm good". "All they've done is argue". "Everyone wants to stay in a group and make the market the base". Dennis turned his attention back to his comic book. "Oh and Greg is here". I spotted him arguing with someone.
I tuned in on the arguments.
"We should stay together!" Shouted one man.
"I need to find my son!" Yelled a woman.
"I don't want anything to do with you people!" Someone yelled.
"We need a strong leader!"
"Shut up!" Yelled a strong voice. Everyone got silent and focused on a old man in a police uniform. He looked in his early 50s. His white hair was tucked into a police cap. He had a wrinkled tired face. His large gut sagged over his belt. He had his hand placed over his gun.
"Now I know y'all are scared and have family and friends to find but do you think you could help them if you're dead!" "My son is right, we need to stick together". " I've been captain of the police force for 29 years, I know how to handle this stuff". "We need a group with a democracy and I'll be the leader".
Everyone agreed, probably because he was a cop.
"We'll make this market into a fortress". He continued. "Conserve food". "We'll all do our part, everyone". "My name is Officer Ivan by the way".
"The only problem is...I don't know anything about these...zombie things". " Does anyone here know allot about zombies?"
"Oh, oh, me, me!" Shouted Dennis as he jumped up and down. "I know everything about zombies!" Everyone looked at Dennis wondering how he knows. Officer Ivan smiled.
"We'll you'll be my left hand man next to my son". He said.
Did I really want to stay here and rely on these strangers. All we wanted was some food. Tyreese did say sticking together in a group was the best idea. Sure beats finding a boat by the coast tho.
It doesn't matter. I have to do what's best for Ozzie now and being protected by a bunch of other people might be the only way we could survive.
I guess we're apart of this "Democracy" now, no backing out.
