Leola and Ozzie vs. The World

Chapter 15

    We've been staying at the market for 3 weeks...or 2...I dunno I lost count after day 10.

   Things have changed. This was no longer a democracy, it turned into a dictatorship. Officer Ivan is Hitler minus the racism.

   He made this crazy system where everything is a group. There are reds, blues, greens, and purples.

   Reds are Ivan's soulless soldiers who'd do whatever he says. They were big, tuff and strict. They guarded the food, the Pharmacy, and patrolled outside.

   Blues are practically slaves. They kept the place clean and tended to the food. When it wasn't about hygiene, they're outside building a thick tall wooden gate. Because it's wood, zombies couldn't climb it. The gate isn't complete tho.

   Greens are the educated people who work in the pharmacy. They'll patch you up if you're cut or anything. There were only two greens.

   Purples or in other words, women have to take care of the children. We keep them in the toy area and watch them.

   Because I'm so lucky, I'm a purple. I have to sit in the back of the store and watch a bunch of kids. I begged them to let me be a green (since I do know a little about medical stuff) but they ignored me. A red told me it's because I'm just a kid. That pissed me off.

   Atleast I get to watch Ozzie meet other kids their age. She didn't seem happy about it. She'd play for a while (while looking sad) then return and sit with me. I wondered what was going on. She's been quiet since she had to stab that zombie that pounced on me. I'll ask at lunch.

    Officer Ivan acted like a pampered king. Power was quickly getting to his head and he was becoming more strict.

   Days ago, a woman and her husband wanted to join the group. Ivan rejected them and left them for dead. Yesterday, a woman wanted out so she stole food and ran away. She was caught and Ivan had her executed by a red. Everyone in the market was mad at Ivan but then he went on and on about sacrifice and how he's the leader. I'm sure everyone would overthrow him but was too scared or didn't want to screw the chances of survival.

   Dennis didn't seem to care about anything (but his mom) as long as he had a comic book. Dennis is like the son Ivan has never had. He wasn't cold hearted but he was very resourceful.

   He found out useful information about the zombies: If you're bitten, a female's bite will turn you in only a few minutes or hours but if you're bit by a male, it'll take a few days.

    The apocalypse was all the new beef's fault and whoever ate it, became the first zombies.

   The zombies can run, climb, jump but can't swim or fly.

   They're attracted to noise (obviously).

    Only the destruction of the brain can kill them once and for all.

    When you are bitten by a male, symptoms include: Rough coughing, dizziness, munchies of meat and dry itchy, rough, crust forms around arms, legs and eyes.

    If bitten by a female you get a hot fever, your skin quickly gets dry, itchy, rough, and crust forms around arms, legs, and eyes, and you get really hungry.

   This isn't like The Walking Dead. When you die of natural cause, you die. You won't come back as a zombie. I'm relived by that.

    Dennis says he's still studying and conducting "research" when all I see is him clinging onto his mom or reading.

   My mind always found itself thinking about my family. Where are they?  Is mom still with uncle? Is dad dead? Are they safe? Why did they leave Ozzie behind that night?
