At first, I didn't know what I was seeing but it was very clear. They were kissing and enjoying it.
I didn't know if I should just pretend I didn't see anything or tell them that I saw. Before I could do anything, Ozzie approached me.
"There you are!" She said loudly. Adam and Jonah stopped kissing and looked my way. I quickly jumped off the tractor, and covered Ozzie's mouth.
"Shhhhh!"
Adam and Jonah walked over to me with nervous red faces. I was hoping they didn't see me.
"Leola", Jonah said softly as he rubbed the back of his neck "how much did you see?"
"Um...like...everything..." I answered awkwardly. Jonah sighed.
"Well...what do you want?" Jonah asked.
"What?" I asked.
"If you want medicine, we can get that for you". "If you want more food, we can get that". "Anything, as long as you don't tell anybody".
"Guys no, you don't have to bribe me, I won't tell anybody".
Adam and Jonah let out a sigh of relief.
"Wait, tell anybody what?" Ozzie asked.
"Thank you". Adam said.
"Does anybody else know?" I asked.
"Know what?" Ozzie asked.
"...No". Adam answered looking down at his feet.
"Nobody?" I repeated. "Not even your dad?"
"Wait, I wanna know what the secret is, tell me, pleeease". Ozzie begged bouncing up and down. I sighed and turned to her.
"Adam and Jonah don't want me to tell anybody that they broke a painting of Jesus". I lied quickly.
"Ooooo". Ozzie said towards Adam and Jonah. "But don't worry, I won't tell anybody either". She ran off probably to go tell someone.
"Anyway Leola, no, not even pa". Adam murmured.
I was silent for a few minutes searching for anything else to say that'll keep this conversation off the awkward scale.
"So you guys have been dating all this time, in secret?" I asked. "Don't you wanna openly be who you are and still be together without hiding in the shadows?" "What are you so afraid of?"
"You don't understand". Jonah said. "This isn't the first time we've been caught, ya know what type of things people would make us do just to keep their mouths close". "They don't care if we're in love, people will just use that against us".
"Also we're Christians". Adam added. "Pa says being gay is against the Lord". " We love the Lord more than anything...but we can't change who we are, no matter how hard we try". "Pa also doesn't believe in same sex and if he finds out..."
"You're his son, he'd never stop loving you-
"You don't know that!" Adam said. "He thinks it's against the Lord". "Pa is a good Christian but very judgmental, he hates terrorism, satinist, hippies, democrats, any other religion, emos, homosexuals pretty much anything he doesn't understand".
"So what if you're dad will be mad, he loves you, he'll get over it!" "Don't you think your love for each other is more important than what anybody else thinks". " What they believe doesn't matter, you two do". "Aren't you tired of having to hide?" "Come out, and you'll feel much better about yourselves".
They were silent. Adam looked down at the ground as if he was thinking hard about it. Jonah shook his head at me.
"No...it's not that easy". Jonah said softly. "I'd just appreciate it if you kept it a secret and that's it".
