"Ozzie, be careful, something could get your leg!" I called from a distance. I wasn't sure she could hear me. She was scavenging what was left of the market while I was roaming the parking lot looking at the cars that survived the blast.
It was hard to really concentrate with the hot morning sun shining on us. The whole area smelled like roasted zombies and gasoline. Maybe I was smelling myself since we slept in the sewer last night.
"Leola!" Ozzie called running over to me. "Look what I found!"
It was our bookbags we packed before we found the market. I couldn't believe they survived the blast with our stuff...well most of it. Everything was still there but my bag crisp and the strap was burnt off.
"We can fix it!" Ozzie said cheerfully. I smiled and rubbed her shoulder.
"You didn't find anything else in the rubble?" I asked. Ozzie handed me some small knives but the plastic handles were melted into a weird shape. Anything can help tho.
"Help me look through all these cars, we need one". I commanded. Ozzie nodded and we checked every car that survived the blast.
I checked a van and Ozzie checked a Subaru. The door to the van was open, it had half a tank of gas, but there was a family of zombies inside.
They beat on the window and bit it trying their best to get me. I stayed in my spot and sighed.
Is this what happened to everyone's family? Zombified or eaten alive. Where's my family? Are they safe? I'm lucky to have Ozzie and I'll do anything I have to to keep us alive. For family.
"Leo, I found a car!" Ozzie called. I rushed over to the car and double checked. It was clean. No damage, full tank of gas, and no zombies occupied it.
I opened the door and took a closer look. You can never be too careful. The car was officially safe. Thank God it was a Subaru, I could just press a button and it started. "Get in". I said.
Ozzie rushed over in shotgun. She wasn't old enough and I don't want the airbags crushing her. "In the back". I said. Ozzie groaned and crawled into the back. "And don't forget seatbelts!"
I gripped the wheel and stared ahead feeling a little nervous. I haven't drove a car since I got my license. We never had money for a car and uncle never trust anyone with his car.
I took a deep breath and pressed on the gas pedal. Like a flash, everything came back to me about driving. I easily drove out of the parking lot and into the road.
"Um...Leo". Ozzie called. "Where are we going?"
"To the coast to find a boat". I answered.
"But...who's gonna protect us?"
"Er...we'll protect each other".
"No group?"
"No group". "We're a group". " Only you and me". "Its...Leola and Ozzie vs The World!" Ozzie laughed.
We drove in silence for a while. My plan was to find the closest coast. My small town is closet to Palm Bay. We could find some boats there!
My plan was set and we'll get there in no time!
