LAFAYETTE CEMETERY
Klaus stares at Elijah after sharing the memory. Then, all of a sudden, Klaus vamp-speeds away. Elijah follows leaving Nicole alone again. "Ugh seriously?!" Nicole yells in frustration at her father knowing she has to chase them again. Elijah catches up with him quickly. "Niklaus, I understand your anger, but I implore you, be better than him. Do what he could not; demonstrate the grace of mercy, rather than this petty cruelty." Elijah tries to approach Klaus to calm him. "You ask me to show mercy to one who has wronged me. You really don't know me at all, do you, brother?" Klaus asks with fury and rage in his eyes. "Enough." Rebekah steps in. "Whatever I have done wrong, my guilt is nothing compared to yours. You want revenge? Fine. But, before you have it, I will look you in the eye and tell you why it was your cruelty and your spite that led us to this." Rebekah says with sadness.
Klaus jumps on top of a tomb. "Go on, then. Speak your piece, and when you are finished, I will grant you the punishment you deserve, even if I have to go through Elijah to do so." Klaus says with murder in his eyes. Klaus perches himself on top of a tomb in order to pretend to be a judge. Nicole is running and finally finds them. "Are we done running now?!" She asks bent over trying to catch her breath again. "Now that we have one unbiased juror; Let it begin. The trial of Rebekah Mikaelson." Klaus shouts as he points the stake at Rebekah. Nicole just stares in disbelief at her Uncle. "What a relief. His ego is in check." Rebekah utters to Elijah. Nicole walks and stands next to Elijah. "Dad is this really necessary?" Nicole asks crossing her arms. "Just speak your truth Rebekah. I'll make certain he behaves himself." Elijah says taking a seat on one of the broken pieces in the cemetery. "You stand accused of betraying your own blood. How do you plead?" Klaus asks carrying on this charade of being a judge. "I plead you to shut up and listen." Rebekah says with an attitude. "You summoned our father. You brought him to our home. What possible defense could you have?" Klaus asks as he opens his arms in a questioning manner; waving the stake around. "I knew he was the only thing that you feared, and I wanted you to run." Rebekah says with no remorse.
Klaus answers quickly. "Because you hated me." Klaus says with wide angry eyes. "Because you were hateful. You denied me the freedom to love." Rebekah snaps back at him. "Oh, so that's your defense? You called Mikael; the Destroyer, the Hunter of Vampires; because I detained you from pursuing some dull suitors." Klaus asks with sarcasm. "You were cruel, and controlling, and manipulative." Rebekah says becoming emotional. With every word of that sentence her hard mask begins to break away. "I was trying to protect you! From imbeciles, and leeches. Not to mention your own poor judgment." Klaus yells at her. "And what about the one that you loved enough to call friend?" Rebekah asks with hurt in her voice. Klaus tenses at her question. Nicole and Elijah both see how the very mention of Marcel makes him grow angry. "Why did you forbid me to love Marcel?" Rebekah asks trying to get a truthful answer out of him. An answer she always wanted to know. Klaus stands suddenly and points at Rebekah. "Do not mention his name." Klaus says as his eyes fill with rage, hurt and betrayl. All the while he remains pointing at Rebekah.
Elijah and Nicole just stare at him. Elijahtrying to understand how Klaus became this person before him. Nicole was trying to understand how he could suddenly disown and talk about Marcel as if he were nothing. Marcel was family. Nicole had to come to terms with marcel being in the picture and basically becoming her adoptive brother. She loved Marcel and now her father was going to cut him from her life. "What has happened to you?" Rebekah asks breaking Nicole out of her thoughts. Nicole focused on Rebekah again. "I remember the sweet boy who made me laugh and gave me gifts, who loved art and music." Nicole looked up at her father, a part of her wishing she knew what he was like then. "I wanted to be just like you." Rebekah says with hope. "How could you have fallen so far?" Rebekah asks in disbelief. Klaus' eyes go wide, his mouth falls open slightly and hurt appears on his face. He has no answer. Nicole looks at the floor in disappointment. Elijah takes a step toward Klaus. "You say you despise Rebekah for her betrayal, and yet no one has stood by your side for so long, not even I myself. Perhaps it's you that's forgotten. I remember the day that Father caught you whittling little chess pieces with his hunting knife. He beat you so mercilessly and for so long, I actually feared for your life." Klaus looks down, remembering that day with tear filled eyes.
FLASHBACK-- 10TH CENTURY MYSTIC FALLS
Mikael is brutally beating Klaus, who is almost fully grown now, and who is curled in the fetal position on the floor, with a whip. Elijah rushes into the room to urge him to stop. Rebekah runs into the room with Mikael's sword in her hands, aiming it at her father. "Stop it! Stop it! I will not let you hurt him anymore!" She yells at him as she shakes in fear. "You stand against me? For him?!" Mikael yells angrily as he grabs the sword from Rebekah's hands and leaves.
END FLASHBACK
LAFAYETTE CEMETERY
Nicole has tears in her eyes again. The mention of Mikael beating her father makes her break. Ever since she could remember any mention, or sound, or movie scene of a person being abused made Nicole wince and break down. She couldn't stand it. Especially being a Lockwood and seeing the old slave cellars, she could never stomach imagining what happened down there.
Klaus' eyes are filled with tears. "So, you would paint her as a loyal sister...." He tries to blink away his tears. "...but she betrayed me out of lust for Marcel." He licks his bottom lip as his tears still threaten to spill. "Perhaps that was why you did it; for love. Perhaps I might temper my rage if Rebekah will admit she was a victim of her own idiocy." Klaus is losing it. "Dad, Stop it!" Nicole yells at him trying to calm him down. "That her great love, Marcel, used her to oust this family and to take my city!" He yells in fury. "Dad, that's enough!" Nicole tries to move toward him but Elijah pulls her back. "Marcel did not manipulate me." Rebekah says barely above a whisper.
Klaus looks at her with disdain. "You defend him..." Klaus crouches down and quiets his voice. Nicole narrows her eyes. She knows what he's doing. "And yet you can't help but wonder, what if I'm right?" He asks trying to plant doubt in Rebekah's mind about Marcel's intentions. "We loved each other. It was your refusal to respect that that led to your ruin." Rebekah fires back with tears in her eyes and hurt in her voice. "Then why didn't he chase after you when you fled New Orleans?" Klaus asks waiting for her to answer. "Oh, yes! That's right." He says standing and waving the stake as if he just came to a brilliant conclusion. "He was here stealing what I built!" He yells in anger. "You want me to renounce Marcel, to beg for your forgiveness?" Rebekah and Klaus glare at each other in silence. "I won't. Marcel is not at fault. I called Mikael." She says with firmness in her voice. Klaus glares at her even harder. "Rebekah, you must—" Elijah begins but Rebekah cuts him off and begins angrily screaming. "I was the one who brought him to New Orleans because of your wickedness!"
Klaus looks heartbroken as Rebekah continues. "I wanted love and happiness, and you denied me the freedom to have either." Elijah closes his eyes in defeat knowing this isn't going to end well. Nicole just stares at Rebekah in shock of what's coming out of her mouth. "Yes, I hated and I was afraid of our father, but he was a lesser evil than you." Klaus' eyes widened in fury. Nicole saw the look in his eyes; she knew at any moment her father was going to snap. "My bastard brother who loomed over me, threatening me as you are now." Klaus stands stoic like the calm before the storm as Rebekah continues shouting at him. "I wanted rid of you, and given the choice, I'd do it again!" Rebekah screams, ending her monologue.
Klaus in a rage; lunges at Rebekah in vamp speed, knocking Nicole to the ground. Klaus then pushes Rebekah against a tomb and is just about to stake her in the heart when Elijah tackles him. When they get back up to their feet, Elijah has both Papa Tunde's blade and the white oak stake. Nicole sits up noticing her knees and hands are bleeding but ignores it and gets up to help her family. Elijah smells the blood and his head snaps to Nicole. Klaus and Rebekah do too. They all suddenly have guilty expressions on their faces. "I'm okay. I promise, but this is insane." Nicole says in disbelief. "Sister, take Nicole, leave us and heal her." Elijah says moving his gaze back to Klaus."Uncle Elijah, I swear I'm..." Nicole begins but Elijah cuts her off. "Nicole stop! Rebekah; I said, go heal her please."Rebekah nods, scoops up Nicole and walks away with her in her arms. He watches her leave before he turns to face Klaus. "You wouldn't listen to her. So, now, you must deal with me." Elijah says raising his arms to show that he has the power now.
