Day of the Aptitude Test
Venus didn't know why the man managing her aptitude test was so shook by her test results. In fact, he didn't even tell her the results. He said something about Abnegation before shoving her out the door and glaring at her like she was dangerous.
Her tongue was dangerous, not anything else. She was shit at everything else.
The door was open when she arrived home. In fact, it was on the jar, so she just pushed it open and entered. The smell of alcohol came from the living room; she could see her father's dirty boots in the kitchen. Marcus was home.
"It's only me," Venus spoke, slipping her grey boots off beside the door. She crept through to the living room, wriggling her toes on the bare carpet.
Her father sat, slouched in the grey armchair, his under-eyes dark. He stared almost lifelessly at the bottle of alcohol in his hand, wrinkles making him appear older like cracks in ancient porcelain. Venus didn't know if he noticed her presence until he spoke up, voice rough.
"Tell me."
Venus flinched, bringing both her hands to her front and picking her nails nervously. "He didn't give me a result."
"He didn't?"
There was a silence.
Then Marcus lifted the bottle to his lips, downing the last couple sips before outstretching his arm and launching it directly at his daughter.
Venus let out a weak screech as the bottle slammed into her arm. Glass smashed around her, around her bare feet, and blood welled from a cut it made on her bare arm.
"You're a fucking liar!" Marcus screamed, propelling himself from his armchair and wobbling to stand up straight. Venus pressed herself against the wall, eyes wide, hands gathered at her chest.
"If this is an excuse to choose Dauntless I'm not having it!" Marcus snarled, the back of his hand contacting with Venus's cheekbone. She held in a whimper as her father lingered over her, eyes blazing. "You're not following that reckless brother of yours! He is dead to us now."
