Melissa and I aren't close anymore. We don't do anything together. We barely even talk. So everyday, I follow the same routine. Wake up, go to school, come home, go to work, come home again, and repeat.
The days have been feeling more gloomy lately. But today isn't the same as usual. My phone has 17 missed calls by the time I come home from work. When did they even go through? My phone wasn't on silent.

Unknown Number
6:15 p.m.Melissa has been trying to reach me all day. It must be important for her to keep calling like this. I make a note to myself to return her call. Then, I notice how the most recent call is from an unknown number. The first thought that crosses my mind is Solie. My hopes are so high that I don't even think before dialing the number back.
It goes straight to voicemail. I take a breath to regain my composure. What am I doing? What am I literally doing with my life? Ugh.
I'm about to head to the pantry to grab a bag of chips when my phone rings again. Sadly, it's not the number calling me back, it's Melissa. I answer the phone already eager to hang up.
"What." Anyone can tell I'm annoyed.
"Stella. Oh my gosh. What.... Are you.... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry... for everything. This past week without you and Solie has been... hell, for me. And it was such a bad, terrible, horrible.... dugly idea to separate myself from you when we should have been closer than ever at this time. I can't tell you enough how much I regret a lot of my life and..." Melissa takes a pause.
"Can we just.... Can we just meet up? For like a donut... or something. I know you don't like coffee."
I continue the pause for a little longer and I can tell that Melissa is too afraid of my response to break the silence.
"Dugly isn't a word," I try to lighten the mood a bit by joking because I was never mad at her to begin with. I never hated her or even thought about hating her. What happened to Solie isn't her fault. If anything, I'm mad at myself and taking it out on everyone else. So, it feels like I have to lighten the mood by joking.
Melissa laughs. It isn't her normal, bold laugh, but instead a shy and afraid one. I can't blame her though. She's under the impression that I'm mad at her.
"But yeah. We can meet up for a donut. Meet me Mama's Dee's in half an hour."
I can feel Melissa's smile through the phone. "Thank you so much. It means a lot," she exclaims sighing in relief.
I turn my phone screen off and grab a bag of potato chips. I wonder what Solane is doing right now.
