It gets closer to 11pm as all eight of us pull up into a parking lot very far from Melissa's. We all get out of the car laughing as the music blasts loudly from inside the building.
"Um... Jer? There's a security guard at the front door...", Solane whispers loudly at me. "Security normally means that there are either drinks or this is a really important party."
Melissa squeals loudly. "Oooo Guys! We hit the rich jackpot! Look at how crazy this place is! It even matches my outfit!" She fans her face with her hands and her smile jumps out of her mouth. Solane redirects her attention from Melissa back to me. I give her a smirk that asks for her to trust me and she sighs as we all walk up to the doors.
"I'm going to need to see some sort of identification," the man says in a deep and scruffy voice. It's intimidating.
"We're on the VIP list," I argue.
The man continues to look down at us through his dark sunglasses.
"I don't care if you're on the presidents list. You're not getting in without an ID."
Solane reaches for my arm as she looks into my eyes pleadingly. She whispers to me, "Please, Jeremy, I don't want any trouble. Let's just go."
I shake my head firmly at her and step closer to the man, releasing Solane's grip on me.
"We're on the list, and so I'm expecting to get in."
Then the back door opens and three men walk out. They're all laughing and are dressed rich looking. After a wave, two of them walk off and the last one turns to go back in when he turns and faces all eight of us at the door. He smiles and walks over. When he gets closer, I recognize him. It's Sean, one of my former dealers.
"Thorne, my man! Yo, what's good bro?" He dabs me up and looks over to the security guy.
"What's going on?"
Melissa pushes to the front of the group. She can't stand still.
"This stupid guy won't let us in! But we're on the VIP list! I mean, just look at me.." she coughs awkwardly. "Us.."
Sean laughs and waves us to follow him through the door he had come out from. "They're good to go."
Solane giggles at how pissed the security guy became. I silently join in.
The outside of the building is nothing compared to the inside. There are blue, pink, and purple lights everywhere. A sort of fog fills the floors and the area is filled to the brim. The ground shakes as everyone jumps up and down to the beat of the music.
The bar has drunk people in every direction. The bartenders roll their eyes and continue to pour drinks for the not so drunk people. Most of the girls wear minimal clothing and crazy colorful hairstyles.
Melissa screams, grabs Nickson's arm, and gets lost in the crowd. The rest of us laugh.
"We'll meet back up with you guys later, okay?", Sharon yells. The music is too loud for us to hear anyone.
Solane and I nod.
The music rings in my ears. But when I look at Solane, everything else around us disappears. I still wonder how a person can feel like this sometimes.
"Well, if we're all splitting up, then Neal and I will catch y'all on the flip side," Stella squeals very inaudibly, almost like she mouthed it.
Neal points at something on the other side of the room and Stella focuses her attention on it. Both of their faces light up and they race over to it. Since when had they become so buddy buddy?
