Lucifer
A few hours earlier...I didn't want to leave Jason given the fact that he was practically due any day now. But even that couldn't stop my phone from ringing as I picked it up off the nightstand and glanced at the screen. Still groggy, my brain was starting to program itself for the day ahead. God I wished I had one more day off before I had to return back to work. As I wiped the sleep away from my eyes, my focus came in sharp and crystal clear which is better than any 4K TV you see out in the market today. A quick glance over my shoulder told me that Jason was still fast asleep beside me as I quietly rolled out of bed and put the phone to my ear in the same instant. This had better be good.
"Morningstar."
"Good morning, sir," said Abigail. "I'm sorry to have to call you so early, but you're needed at the office. The suits say that it's urgent that you come in immediately."
My brow furrowed as I my braced my arm against the glass. "The suits? Do you mean the chairmen of the board? What in the hell are they doing there?"
"Well, to be honest, Mr. Morningstar. I really don't know. All I got was a message handed to me by one of the interns. Shall I tell them that you're on your way?"
I sighed. Running my fingers through my hair as I stared out the window that overlooked downtown Los Angeles. Sunrise was mere minutes away as the sky turned from black to pale blue. While the lights of the city began to fade one by one. It was a whole new day in L.A. I could hear Abigail calling out to me in the background as I cleared my throat and spoke with the same level of authority like the way I usually do when it means business.
"Tell the board I'll be there in half an hour. And under no circumstances are they allowed access into our systems. Is that understood?"
"Right away, Mr. Morningstar. I'll see you soon."
The call ended as I tossed my phone down on the bed and rushed to take a shower. Minutes later I was dressed and ready to go, putting on the finishing touches to one of my cufflinks as I left the room and headed downstairs. It was in the kitchen that I already had coffee made as I poured myself a mug and screwed the cap on tight before leaving a note for Jason as I left it sitting on his nightstand. Then I went to the garage and got into my car as I raced on up the ramp and out onto the narrow empty street. Racing out towards the expressway that was clearly starting to show signs of heavy traffic.
But I managed to bypass all that and made it to the office with only fifteen minutes left to spare. Whereas, Abigail was already waiting for me by the time I stepped off the private elevator and headed towards my office.
"Are all members present and accounted for?" I asked, taking a sip from my coffee mug.
"Affirmative. They're already in the conference room awaiting your arrival."
"Good. Thank you, Abigail."
The doors to my office opened as if by motion sensors when really it's because I wished it so. Sunlight appeared over the tops of high-rises and many other commercial buildings as I walked around my desk and took a seat for a moment. My laptop that sat open and off to the side displayed a constant screensaver of Jason and I on our wedding day. I could've stared at it all day too, and never get tired of looking at it, but I just couldn't afford the time. A tap of the spacebar brought the screen to life as I moved the tiny arrow over to a shortcut that displayed an array of high-valued security cameras that monitored the entire floor all day and all night. No rooms were left unattended except for the bathrooms, of course.
Conference rooms, the break room, my office, the lobby and the rooftop were all under my watchful eye. Nothing gets passed me, without me knowing about it. I moved the arrow again as I clicked on the camera that showed me the main conference room with all of the members of the board patiently waiting for me in their chairs. They spoke amongst themselves in hush voices while others enjoyed a nice cup of coffee or complementary breakfast from the cart over in the corner. But there was one man who stayed quiet amongst the lot of them with his hands folded neatly together on the table.
