Lucifer

Daylight came much too soon in my opinion as I opened my eyes to the light of the room the following day. I tossed the bed sheet aside and planted both feet firmly on the floor as I raised my arms above my head and stretched as hard as I could, grunting softly. I went to the bathroom next and got ready for work as I showered, shaved, and brushed my teeth all within an hour before going to my closet. The lights in the room came on automatically as I gathered my affairs in order like I did every other day just like any normal person would. Then again, I'm not a normal person. I'm not even human for that matter. I'm the devil.

I emerged from the closet and came upon a rare sight, one so strong with emotions that it burned itself within my memory for all eternity. A still sleeping Jason lay on his stomach as a streak of sunlight lingered on his face. His naked skin looked inviting as the urge to play hookie became stronger. But I had been away from work for far too long to allow my business to go on without me. With my cufflinks in check, I moved across the room and sat along the edge of the bed by his side. I leaned down to kiss his forehead as he stirred in his sleep, but did not wake. Nor did I want him to.

I left the bedroom shortly after that, as I walked down the glass catwalk and descended the stairs, turning on the coffee machine with my mind. Then I grabbed my car keys from the ceramic bowl on the end table next to the couch as I checked my pockets to make sure I had my wallet. The coffee machine beeped as I went to the cabinet and retrieved a travel mug. I filled the mug up to the top and screwed the cap on tight as I headed out the door. It was to be another hot day in Los Angeles as the heat hit my body like a brick-wall as I exited the house and walked to my car.

The drive into downtown Los Angeles was another serious problem. Bumper to bumper cars with nowhere to go as horns honked in the distance made me feel irritated. I tightened my grip on the steering wheel as the leather creaked under my immense strength while my foot tapped the accelerator. I was growing impatient. Fabulous.Up ahead, I could see the off ramp. It was eight hundred yards away at best. As the car ahead of me moved a bit further, I glanced over my shoulder and noticed that one was looking. Throwing the shifter into first gear, I cranked the wheel and punched the gas, racing along the shoulder lane like a bat out of hell.

More cars honked as I drove past them like a maniac. Only I didn't care. I was just glad to get out of there. Through city streets, five red lights, two left turns and one parking ticket later, I arrived at the parking garage that was right across the street from Morningstar Enterprises. I parked on the roof towards the back corner of the lot as I shut off the engine and stepped out. Standing tall towards the rising sun, the exterior windows of the building reflected the golden rays as a sliver of light shined down upon me. Walking across the parking lot toward the elevator, it sent me straight to the ground floor before I hopped across the busy street like a frog.

But once inside, the lobby is bustling with activity. I acknowledge the security team as they sit behind their desk and head for the private elevator. Greeting me with a smile and tablet in her hands, Abigail, begins to fill me in on today's schedule.

"Good morning, Mr. Morningstar. Welcome back."

"Thank you, Abi. So what's on the agenda for today?"

"You have a conference call with Mrs. Hastings at 2:30 this afternoon. Followed by a live video chat with Mr. Zhang to discuss going over the contract. Oh, and a gentleman is waiting for you in your office. I tried to get him to leave, but he said it's urgent."

"It's all right, I'll deal with him. Did he happen to mention his name?"

"Amenadiel."

My legs pickup the pace as Abigail tries to keep up, but I lose her when I round the next cubicle. I reach the doors of my office and step inside, seeing my angelic brother look out the window. With his back to me, I see his wings appear as they extend outward to their full length. Beautiful though as they may be my wings were one of a kind. What I wouldn't give to see them one last time. The doors close behind me with a soft click as I walk across the marble tile floor towards my desk.

"Well, this is a surprise," I said. "What are you doing here?"

"This is quite the operation you've got going on here. Pretending to be whatever the hell it is you are so that the world can believe you're just like them, a human. Tell me, brother, how many souls have signed their names on those pesky little contracts you hand over to them? A hundred thousand? A billion? Then what happens after they die? I'm curious to know."

I scoff, walking over to my chair that sits next to the fireplace. "This is neither the time nor the place, Amenadiel. I will not ask again as to why you're here. Now spit it out."

Amenadiel sighs, his wings folding behind his back as he turns around to face me. "Whatever you might think of me, Lucifer, I can assure you that I'm not the enemy. I'm just an angel who's simply trying to do his job."

"Cut the shit."

He chuckles, walking over to sit down across from me, while the light of the flames shows off his striking features. "How do you think life began, Lucifer? Do you believe it was God? Or was something else entirely? For nearly four and a half billion years the earth has been around and in that time it has seen some pretty amazing things. From the origins of Adam and Eve came the dinosaurs then thus, the first humans were born. Since then time has evolved immensely throughout the ages into what it is today."

"Spare me the history lesson, Amenadiel, and get to the point."

"I was getting to that before you interrupted me. Now, where was I? Oh yes. The cycle of life and death. What does it mean to you?"

"It's known as the eternal cycle called Samsara. That life, death and rebirth is the heart of everyday living. Therefore, the life of a single organism falls under the category of reproduction. Meaning giving new life, birth as it were."

Amenadiel smiles slowly. "Ah, yes, birth. There it is. The secret that was once bestowed upon by Eve now resides in all women or so they say."

"I don't follow."

"No course you don't. I mean, why would you? You've been so busy trying to win the heart of your human lover that you've completely lost sight of what's happening around you. In fact, how is Jason these days? Is he feeling okay? How's his health?"

"You leave him alone."

"No matter what he's becoming. It will all make perfect sense soon enough. I hope you'll be ready when the time comes."

I don't realize that my fingers are gripping the armrest so hard that my nails scrape across the leather until the voice of my personal assistant, Abigail, appears on the phone via the intercom.

"I'm sorry to disturb you, Mr. Morningstar, but you have a call waiting for you on line one."

"Well I guess that's my cue to leave," Amenadiel said, standing up. "And I hope I receive an invitation to your wedding. Stay sharp, Lucifer."

And just like that he was gone. No gust of wind. No flash of light. The angel simply vanished as I walked past his chair to get to my desk and answered the incoming call.
