Mallory's POV:
Free combat Tuesday's were my favorite. I saw Alex literally disarm a einherji with a broad sword and Magnus not too gracefully stab someone in the stomach with his hotel issued sword. Jack wanted him to learn how to fight without his help, or something like that.
Halfborn cut off that one guy's head as he does most days, dodging a thrown shield I killed some girl in my way.
Yep, normal day in Valhalla. Then a laugh came from my left. I witness Halfborn bleeding from multiple wounds, his head about to be cut off, at the edge of a cliff.
I look away as his head goes flying and the rest of him falls over the side of the cliff. Returning my attention to the battle, I managed to stay a live for about another hour.
Waking up in my bed, afterwards I get dress and go see if Halfborn was up yet.
"Gunderson? You up?" I ask, knocking. Nothing. "Halfborn?" I pound in his door.
"Better not be naked like last time," I mutter opening the door. "Idiot?"
His room was more of a mess then usual, things thrown everywhere. I move to the bathroom, where I hear panting.
I see, my boyfriend huddled in the corner, a bewildered and fearful expression on his face.
"What's wrong?" I ask, furrowing my brow.
His brown eyes flash to mine, "who are you!? Where am I?! Who am I?!" He shouts.
"Very funny Gunderson," I say, not buying his joke while crossing my arms.
"Is that my name?" The truthfully confused and terrified face is starting to conflict me.
"Halfborn, that's enough, let's go get some food." I turn to leave.
"Wait!" He exclaims. "I really don't know anything! Am I supposed to know you?" My heart breaks with that question.
"You really don't remember?" I ask softly. He nods. Taking a deep breath, I collect myself.
"Okay, let's go to the lobby and we'll see if we can get this sorted out." Taking his hand I lead him to the elevator.
"Where are we?" He asks, eyeing the many floor buttons.
"Valhalla, hotel for Odin's dead warriors or einherji." I explain, not able to look him in the eye.
"I'm dead?" He pokes his arm. "Are you dead?" He's about to poke me, I slap his hand away.
"Yes, you died over a thousand years ago, protecting your thane."
"Thousand years ago? Fascinating, is everyone here dead?"
"Yep, except for the Valkyries, they bring the souls here. They're like part time workers." I explain.
"How did you die?" He asks.
"Car bomb." I state shortly.
We finally get to the lobby.
"Careful for flying weapons, you can't permanently die here but I don't want to have to wait for you to wake up, so."
I dodge axes, spears and, knives as I make my way to the front desk, Halfborn on my heels.
"Yes?" Helgi asks as I ring the bell.
"This oaf, died during practice and when he woke up he now he doesn't remember anything." I say, trying to keep my voice even.
"Yes, this sometimes happens."
"Well? How do you fix it!?" I snap.
"It will usually come back on its own, like through event that are familiar. And somethings they just start over, never regaining their memories."
I swallow this information, biting my lip.
"So, just try to reenact some memories or do familiar actions? Jog his memory? That's all you've got!" I needed Halfborn, the Halfborn who has been there for me for decades, not this useless berserker. I wanted my berserker!
"Fine!" I snap, grabbing Halfborn's arm I marched back to our floor.
"What did he say?" He asks once inside the elevator.
"He said to jog your memory by doing familiar actions." I state slowly.
"How long will that take?"
"I don't know!" I snap. "For now lets just try this." Stepping out of the elevator, Alex, Magnus and, TJ were sitting, waiting for us.
"Hey, we were wondering where you two were, figured your two were un, ya know." Alex says, I blush and Halfborn looks confused.
"We've got an issue, the berserker doesn't remember anything." I plop down on the love seat.
"What do you mean, doesn't remember?" Magnus asks.
"As in doesn't remember, doesn't remember, Idiot." I retort.
"How do we fix it?" TJ ask.
"Just familiar things." I say, not mentioning the fact that it might not work.
"That should be easy." Alex says getting up she goes up to Gunderson, and hits him in the head.
"What was that for?" Halfborn asks, holding his head.
"I did that last week," she shrugs.
"How about we go around the hotel?" TJ suggests.
For the next few hours floor 19 went around the hotel, showing him places he used to visit a lot, trying to make Halfborn remember.
When dinner finally came, the only thing we succeeded in was re-explaining how the hotel worked.
Halfborn was like a child in a candy store, his eyes wide, taking in everything. His child likeness helped ease my hurting heart a bit.
After dinner everyone returned to their rooms. I went closed my door, face planted onto my bed and let my tears flow.
The way he looked at me, he didn't remember, his eyes clouded with confusion, fear and anger.
He didn't remember everything we've been through together. Nothing. I finally cried myself to sleep.
Halfborn's POV:
I went into my room, looking around, trying to remember. "Come on." I say to myself, slapping my head. I could see the hurt from the red head, Mallory Keen. We had been close but, I just couldn't remember.
"Mallory Keen," I mutter. "Mack." Her name created an itch in my head. It was driving me crazy.
"Ugh!" I shout. Why couldn't I remember?
