Before Sword of Summer
Halfborn's POV:
Mallory Keen had been at Valhalla for about five years now. She was annoying, a smart-ars, stubborn, and a great shield-sister.
I glanced at the red-head on my mind who was currently slicing the arms off of the other einherji.
Her hair flew and her eyes pierced sharper than her knives.
A flash of pain pulled me back into the fight at hand. I decapitated Helen with my axe. Sliced the arms off of Tyler. Then cut Robert in half. Christina came at me and we battled for a while until an arrow shot threw my head.
I am a berserker yes, but no one in Valhalla could function with serious brain damage. Darkness followed, the image of Mallory Keen in my mind for some reason.
I always have a pleasant dream before I wake from dying. This was no different except for some reason Mallory seemed to be the center of all it all. I was a spectator in all of the memories making everything even more odd and somehow pleasant.
"And who is the pretty woman?" Past-me says. I watch as Mallory knees me in the balls. Even now, I can feel the pain.
"Watch your tone, oaf." She hisses.
"Mallory Keen, meet Halfborn." TJ's voice and laughs rings out.
The image changes and it's the night Mallory arrived.
"Keen! Wait up!" I watch myself shout. She tries shutting the elevator doors but I stick my hand in and step into the elevator with her.
She glares at me and I say what TJ suggests I do after he kneed me in the balls earlier that day, "we got off on the wrong foot, Halfborn Gunderson." I stick my hand out for her to shake. She just glared and leans against the wall.
"Feisty." I laugh at her. Her attitude would serve her well here. Next thing I know she stabs me in the stomach. I laugh.
"The hell?" The redhead cries and goes to stab me again, but I move to stop her.
"I'm a berserker, I can keep fighting until I'm literally hacked to pieces."
"Great," Mallory Keen mutters.
The doors open and she marches out. "Enjoy your afterlife, Keen!" I shout after her. She flicks me off before slamming the door.
The scene changes a few more times. More rapidly this time, our voices call through the air.
"Screw you Gunderson!"
"Irish vixen!"
"Smelly oaf!"
Mallory smirks at me.
"Shield siblings."
"Goodnight shield idiots!"
Mallory fell asleep against me in the diner.
"I bet I can get more skips then you."
"You're on."
Mallory and I skipping rocks.
"Mutated rag doll."
Mallory and I throwing food at each other.
I wake up with a smile on my face. Wait. Why on Odin's Throne am I thinking like this? Odd. For some reason Mallory Keen ran through my mind and dreams.
I shake my head and work on my thesis to clear my head of the Irish vixen.
—————
When dinner came and I joined Mallory and TJ at our table.
"Look who decided to get his fat ars out of bed." Mallory smirked. "Pay up Jefferson!"
TJ groans and gives Keen a handful of red gold.
"You couldn't have gotten up sooner? My bet was you'd join us before supper." The ex-union solider complains.
"TJ lost money which is great. But Keen gained money which puts a damper on my mood." I say and take a swig of mead placed in front of me.
Mallory throws a spoonful of mashed potatoes at me. I duck and it hits Eric from floor 22.
He turns and growls, Mallory points behind her at Tracy from floor 75. Eric then lunges at Tracy and they brawl violently.
"Nice, Mal." TJ smirks and slow claps.
"Shut up, Jefferson." She says. "It's this oaf's fault."
"Right, I made you throw potatoes at me only to miss and hit him." I say sarcastically.
"See, Gunderson gets it, and I didn't miss. Your fat head moved." She points at me with her fork and smiles.
"Fat head filled with tons of-"
"Useless information" Mallory cuts me off.
"Every fact has proved-"
"Useless." Mallory finishes.
"Not." I snap.
"How is knowing Dr. Important's theory on Relative Stuff that You Can't See and Barely Prove, helpful?" She fires. TJ at this point was adding an unearthly amount of butter into his potatoes and ignoring us.
"You just don't have the brain cells to comprehend the material, woman." I was in the doghouse now. However I didn't really care because I got to see her eyes flash with anger that made her freckles pop and her green and orange eyes glow.
"Woman! Excuse you, you over sized Swedish hamster."
"Did you guys see the giant quilt the resistants from floor 986 made?" TJ enters the conversation causally.
"Yeah, it's super soft. Lost a hand to touch it but it was worn it." Mallory says moving on form our little bickering.
"Edna alone sewed 124 squares." I say recalling Enda's worn hands paging through her book at the library.
"Well the thing itself has over a million six by six inch squares." Keen adds.
And just like that, we completely stopped bickering and changed topics at basically a drop of a hat.
Though for some reason I kept taking unnecessary glances at the red head across the table from me. For some reason I blushed when her hand accidentally brushed against mine when we both hit TJ. For some reason I liked Mallory Keen more then I should.
